The Kexin Zhang Lab (https://kexinzhang-lab.github.io/) at Yale University is recruiting postdoctoral researchers to develop new computational methods at the interface of cryo-electron microscopy, AI, physics-based modeling, and in situ structural biology.
Our lab develops computational approaches for cryo-EM and cryo-ET that enable molecular detection, structural inference, and biological discovery in complex and native environments. We are particularly interested in methods that combine physical modeling, numerical methods, and data-driven approaches to extract information from noisy biological datasets.
Research directions include
• AI- and physics-based methods for molecular detection in cryo-EM and cryo-ET data
• Computational methods for analyzing heterogeneous molecular structures, conformational landscapes, and continuous dynamics
• Numerical methods for cryo-EM image formation, pose estimation, reconstruction, and structural inference
• Machine learning, foundation models, and representation learning for large-scale structural and cellular imaging data
The lab is based in the Department of Molecular Biophysics and Biochemistry at Yale University and works closely with researchers in structural biology, cryo-EM/cryo-ET, computational biology, applied mathematics, and computer science. Postdoctoral researchers will have substantial flexibility to develop independent research directions while collaborating with experimental and computational groups at Yale and beyond.
Responsibilities
Successful candidates will:
• Develop new computational and mathematical methods for cryo-EM, cryo-ET, structural biology, or related imaging problems
• Design and carry out independent and collaborative research projects
• Implement and benchmark algorithms on simulated and experimental datasets
• Collaborate with experimental structural and cell biology groups
• Communicate research through publications, conference presentations, and open-source software when appropriate
• Contribute to mentoring students and to the scientific development of a growing interdisciplinary research group
Qualifications
Required:
• Ph.D. or anticipated Ph.D. in computational structural biology, computer science, applied mathematics, physics, statistics, biophysics, computational biology, bioengineering, or a related field
• Strong quantitative, computational, and programming skills
• Ability to independently formulate and investigate research questions
• Strong interest in developing new computational methodology
We particularly welcome applicants with experience in one or more of the following areas:
• Computational structural biology
• Computer vision or image processing
• Machine learning, generative modeling, or large language models (LLMs)
• Scientific computing
• Optimization and numerical methods
• Statistical inference
• Biophysical or physical modeling
Previous cryo-EM/ET experience is helpful but not required.
