About the role
The Police Dispatcher serves as a vital communications link within the University of Police Services. This position is responsible for receiving and prioritizing emergency and non-emergency calls, dispatching police and appropriate personnel, while maintaining effective communication with officers in the field. This position ensures the safety of the campus community by timely, accurate, and effective coordination of police, fire, and emergency medical responses.
- Receives and processes emergency (911) and non-emergency calls for service
- Elicits critical information and determines priority of incidents
- Dispatches police officers and other emergency responders
- Maintains continuous radio communication with field personnel
- Monitors officer status and ensures officer safety
- Operates Computer-Aided Dispatch (CAD) systems and maintains accurate logs
- Monitors alarm systems, surveillance cameras, and emergency telephones
- Conducts database inquiries (e.g., NCIC/TIES) and relays information to officers
- Coordinates communication with local law enforcement and emergency agencies
- Provides customer service to students, faculty, staff, and visitors
- Assists with emergency notifications and campus-wide alerts
Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED
- Minimum of six (6) months to one (1) year of experience in dispatching, law enforcement, or a related field
- Ability to obtain and maintain Tennessee Information Enforcement System (TIES) certification
Preferred Qualifications
- Prior experience in a law enforcement or campus police dispatch center
- Knowledge of Computer-Aided Dispatch (CAD) systems
- Familiarity with NCIC and/or state criminal justice systems
- Experience in a multi-line phone system or call center environment
