Responsibilities
Plan and deliver high-quality physical education instruction aligned with North Carolina Standard Course of Study requirements and applicable school curriculum expectations
Develop clear, standards-based learning objectives and student-friendly criteria for success for each lesson
Teach fundamental movement skills, locomotor and non-locomotor movements, object control, coordination, balance, strength, endurance, flexibility, and age-appropriate sport skills
Design developmentally appropriate activities that maximize student participation, movement, practice, and skill mastery
Incorporate instructional modeling, guided practice, independent application, and meaningful feedback to support student learning
Teach students the importance of physical activity, nutrition awareness, personal fitness, hygiene, safety, and lifelong wellness
Use checks for understanding and formative assessments to monitor student progress and adjust instruction accordingly
Establish clear learning expectations and communicate the purpose of physical education activities
Provide opportunities for students to set personal fitness and skill-development goals, monitor their progress, and reflect on their growth
Use active learning strategies that promote engagement, problem-solving, critical thinking, and decision-making
Ensure students spend appropriate instructional time actively participating in purposeful physical activity
Provide specific, actionable feedback that helps students understand their strengths and identify next steps for improvement
Foster student independence, accountability, perseverance, and confidence
Promote the physical, social, emotional, and personal wellness of every student

Provide equitable access to meaningful physical education experiences for students with diverse abilities, backgrounds, learning needs, and levels of physical development
Modify activities, equipment, groupings, and instructional strategies to support participation and progress for all learners
Collaborate with exceptional children (EC) staff, multilingual learner (ML) staff, classroom teachers, and related service providers to implement appropriate supports
Maintain high expectations while providing the accommodations, scaffolds, and encouragement students need to succeed
Establish a learning environment in which students feel respected, represented, safe, and included
Identify barriers to student participation and implement strategies that promote engagement, access, and success
Establish and consistently reinforce routines, procedures, and behavioral expectations for the gymnasium, playground, outdoor spaces, and other instructional settings
Maintain an orderly, respectful, and safe environment that maximizes instructional time
Actively monitor students during instruction, transitions, equipment use, and physical activities
Inspect equipment and instructional spaces for hazards and report maintenance or safety concerns promptly
Teach and reinforce safe movement, appropriate equipment use, and responsible participation
Follow school emergency procedures and applicable health and safety requirements
Respond appropriately to injuries, accidents, behavioral concerns, and other incidents in accordance with school policy
Maintain required documentation related to incidents, student participation, and safety
Assess student progress toward physical education standards and lesson objectives using appropriate formative and summative assessment practices
Maintain accurate records of student performance, participation, grades, and required documentation
Analyze assessment results and observational evidence to identify student strengths, misconceptions, and skill gaps
Reteach skills and adjust instructional approaches when students demonstrate difficulty mastering targeted objectives
Provide timely, actionable feedback and opportunities for students to practice and demonstrate improvement
Use assessment evidence to plan differentiated instruction and support individual student growth
Collaborate with administrators, instructional staff, EC personnel, ML staff, and families to support student achievement and wellness
Participate in professional development, staff meetings, instructional planning, and school improvement initiatives
Support school-wide efforts that promote student wellness, positive school culture, attendance, engagement, and student leadership
Assist with field days, wellness activities, school celebrations, and other school events as assigned
Communicate professionally and appropriately with students, families, colleagues, and administrators
Maintain confidentiality and comply with school policies, professional standards, and applicable laws and regulations
Demonstrate reflection, flexibility, accountability, and a commitment to continuous professional growth
