Physical Education Teacher

About This Role

The Physical Education Teacher develops in students an understanding of good body function and exercise, motivating them to cultivate physical fitness and hygienic habits. This full-time, 10-month position for the 2026-2027 school year is at the Ulster BOCES Center for Innovative Teaching & Learning (CITL) Student-Based Programs at Mt. Marion, working with elementary and/or secondary education students.

Responsibilities

• Teach knowledge and skills in physical fitness, health education, rhythms and dance, and individual, dual or team sports
• Instruct pupils in sportsmanship and basic subject matter specified in state law
• Work cooperatively with other physical education teachers in planning a balanced physical education program
• Analyze, demonstrate and explain basic skills and strategies of formal sports, games, rhythms and fundamentals of body movement
• Provide individualized and small group instruction in order to adapt the curriculum to the needs of each pupil, to the extent feasible
• May teach physical education classes for handicapped pupils, interscholastic athletics or drill team to senior high pupils
• Provide appropriate safety instruction and make safety checks on equipment and field areas to ensure the overall safety of pupils
• Maintain control of storage and use of school-owned property
• Establish and maintain standards of pupil behavior needed to provide an orderly, productive environment in the physical education areas
• Evaluate each pupil's growth in physical skills, knowledge and contribution in team sports
• Maintain professional competence through in-service education provided by the district and in self-selected professional growth activities
• Select and requisition uniforms, equipment and instructional aids; maintain required inventory records
• Communicate with parents and school counselors in pupil progress
• Identify pupil needs and cooperate with other professional staff members in helping pupils solve health, attitude and learning problems
• Cooperate with school administration in providing specialty performing groups for special occasions, PTA meetings, assemblies and interscholastic athletic events
• Supervise pupils in out-of-classroom activities during the assigned working day
• Participate in curriculum and other developmental programs
• Participate in faculty committees and the sponsorship of student activities
• Assume other duties as assigned by the Supervisor

Requirements

• Appropriate NYS certification in Physical Education
• Fingerprinting required
• Experience working with elementary and/or secondary education students preferred
• Possession of a valid NYS teaching certificate
