Phlebotomist Certified Phlebotomist

About This Role

Performing all aspects of phlebotomy on patients of all ages is the core of this role, which also involves processing blood and other laboratory specimens. The Phlebotomist interacts with nursing units for specimen and order tracking and handles computer inquiries.

Responsibilities

• Demonstrate proper phlebotomy technique, proper identification of patient, correct labeling of samples and processing of specimens
• Teach proper phlebotomy technique to students, residents, and new employees
• Obtain blood specimens and non-blood specimens such as urine, sputum, and throat swabs for laboratory testing
• Properly identify patients, select appropriate gauge needles and prepare veins or fingers for collection of blood
• Perform all tests and procedures following standard laboratory procedure and techniques on all patients
• Perform EKGs, breath alcohol testing and transmit results
• Perform registration or order entry as needed
• Complete necessary paperwork and post all laboratory charges to encounter forms for all patients
• Maintain accurate records to facilitate ease of insurance filing
• Respond immediately to "STAT" requests and ensure that specimens are sent and received
• Attend continual educational sessions each year either for technical or personal improvement

Requirements

• High School Diploma or GED equivalency required
• Phlebotomy certification and phlebotomy experience required
• Acceptable certifications include those from one of the following agencies: American Certification Agency (ACA) – CPT certificate, American Medical Technologists (AMT) – RPT certificate, American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) – PBT certificate, American Society of Phlebotomy Technicians (ASPT) - CPT certificate, National Health career Association (NHA) – CPT certificate, National Phlebtotomy Association (NPA) – CPT certificate

Important Details

• Schedule: 9:30am-6:00pm + occasional Saturday 0630 until 12 noon
• Varied benefits packages are available to positions with a 0.6 FTE or higher
