Phlebotomist

About This Role

The Phlebotomist assists in performing various assigned duties, troubleshooting, training, and making workflow recommendations. This role involves collecting and storing specimens according to established procedures.

Responsibilities

• Perform blood draws, labeling specimens, centrifuging specimens, recording maintenance data and decontamination, updating patient information
• Collect and store specimens according to established procedures
• Properly explain in a clear but courteous manner the process of venipuncture (blood drawing) and/or other specimen collection (e.g., urine or fecal) as required
• Demonstrate techniques using straight needles and/or butterfly needles
• Fully understand all of the physicians' orders
• Match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes
• Label, centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens as required by test order
• Check all test requisitions or computer labels against script to ensure 100% correctness
• Package specimens for transport
• Store specimen samples according to required temperature, place samples in appropriate collection container/tube, accurately label, follow different procedures as outlined by specific protocol deemed necessary for transport to maintain integrity of the specimen
• Understand and comply with OSHA and DEP regulations
• Attend annual department trainings
• Answer telephone calls, read laboratory results to satisfy inquiries

Requirements

• Minimum of 3 years work experience performing venipunctures in a fast-paced lab or hospital setting
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite
• High School Diploma or GED
• 2-4 years of experience

Nice to have:

• Valid Phlebotomy certification for the state where you will be employed as required in some states
• 2+ years of experience as Phlebotomist, performing venipunctures
