Phlebotomist

About This Role

Performing procedures including phlebotomy, specimen collection, processing, customer service, and quality assurance is the core of this role. The Phlebotomist ensures all duties comply with Kaiser Permanente's Code of Conduct, Principles of Responsibility, policies, and procedures, as well as federal, state, and local laws and regulations, accreditation, and licensure requirements. This role operates under the technical guidance of the Laboratory Supervisor/Manager or designee.

Responsibilities

• Greet and positively and accurately identify members adhering to KP member experience standards
• Collect blood samples from all patient/member populations using age-appropriate venipuncture or capillary puncture and following KP policies
• Instruct patients regarding the collection and packaging of other specimens such as urine, semen, feces, and timed collections
• Assess specimen integrity and prepare, package, and arrange for transport of specimens in accordance with KPMAS laboratory procedures and DOT regulations
• Arrange for special transport when necessary
• Process specimens to include racking, creating work lists, and loading instruments
• Collect and pick up specimens from clinical departments and transport stat specimens to stat lab testing area following designated workflows and appropriate KP policies
• Dispose of biological waste, needles, and related hazardous materials according to laboratory safety and infection control practices, federal, state, and local laws and regulations
• Respond to internal and external inquiries via phone, email, or text to ensure resolution and customer satisfaction
• Provide orientation and practical training to new hires and students
• Follow defined laboratory procedures and maintain awareness of changes to procedures
• Maintain a clean, adequately stocked, and safe work environment
• Perform administrative duties such as preparation and distribution of reports, and pending log resolution
• Adhere to laboratory quality service standards including access, wait times, and assurance of member satisfaction
• Monitor waiting room and turnaround times, identify unexpected or unreasonable delays, unusual situations, and bring these to the attention of the supervisor, manager, or designee
• Complete all assigned and required trainings in a timely manner
• Adhere to licensing and certificate maintenance requirements including annual CEUs and KP assigned CEUs
• Communicate specimen inquiries, problems, and investigations to appropriate medical, clinical, and technical staff in a timely manner according to established laboratory procedures
• Document member, provider, and customer compliments, concerns, or complaints
• Resolve when able or escalate to manager, supervisor, or designee
