The Patient Services Coordinator II is responsible for coordinating and/or administering clinical and patient services and for performing administrative duties in support of the School of Dentistry Endodontics Clinic. This role ensures smooth clinic operations, inventory management, coordinating patient treatment with assignment of students and residents, and working closely with vendors and the clinic director and/or chair. Assist with patient scheduling, resolves patient problems, reception, and sterilization.

General Responsibilities

  • Under general supervision and according to UAB Medicine established policies and procedures, provides a variety of specialized services in support of the operations of their assigned physicians, advanced practice providers, and assigned clinics.
  • May direct the work of other clerical employees.

Key Duties & Responsibilities

  • Coordinates scheduling and facilitates pre-certification and admitting processes as necessary.
  • Coordinates outpatient scheduling and facilitates pre-certification for diagnostic testing and specialty referrals.
  • Serves as an advocate for patients and patient families, assisting them with obtaining services and assistance available within the University or Birmingham community.
  • Answers patient inquiries verbally or in writing, acting as an advocate.
  • Provides and documents a thorough and accurate record of patient plans and interactions.
  • Performs administrative functions such as collaborating with other members of the care team. May assign work to others, may order supplies.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Preferred Skills

  • Hard skills: Microsoft Office and familiarity with dental software, dental office/dental assisting experience/certification, and working with dental equipment.
  • Soft skills: Excellent communication skills, teamwork, time management, and critical thinking skills.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent and two (2) years office/clerical experience in customer service, call center, physician office, or other clinical environment required.
  • Demonstrated organizational and leadership skills; excellent customer service and communication skills required.

Must:

(1) Attend all required coursework assigned by management;

(2) possess basic knowledge of medical terminology and advanced knowledge of PC applications, software, and database management;

(3) be able to perform math & bookkeeping skills;

(4) possess exceptional telephone & customer service skills; and

(5) be knowledgeable of English grammar & punctuation.

Business Office Education or similar coursework preferred.

Currently certified as a Certified Professional Coder (CPC) by the American Academy of Professional Coders (AAPC) preferred.
