Patient Care Technician II

About This Role

This night-shift post on the cardiac ward pairs patient care with mentoring new nurses. The Patient Care Technician II (PCT II) is responsible for a wide variety of technical and clerical procedures, and has frequent direct patient contact when performing phlebotomy, specimen collection and specimen transport. The role utilizes computers for patient's specimen ordering, accessioning and general data entry, and provides front line support and training of PCT 1 staff, students and new hires.

Responsibilities

• Lead by example, abiding by all established policies, procedures, and standards of behavior
• Conduct yourself with professionalism, compassion, and respect for others
• Remain calm in stressful situations
• Provide guidance and support to PCT I and PCT II staff with daily tasks, education, training, difficult procedures/problems, heavy workload, etc.
• Assist in education of staff with new processes and procedures
• Independently perform, with appropriate documentation, all tasks including phlebotomy, waived testing and ECG in accordance with established policies and procedures
• Consistently obtain and process specimens following established protocols
• Competently explain proper instructions for obtaining specimens
• Verify the identity of the patient and specimen
• Accurately enter data and complete all required documentation
• Maintain proficiency in all areas of outpatient services
• Be able to rotate to all OPSC sites which include the Main Campuses, and the off-sites
• Perform all tasks within standards for timeliness without reminder
• Adjust to varying workloads by effectively prioritizing workload to meet the needs of the department and the care of the patients
• Maintain a clean and orderly work environment
• Dispose of waste, replenish stock and alert appropriate personnel of low inventory situations
• Demonstrate the ability to effectively communicate with co-workers, nurses, physicians, and patients
• Relay messages accurately, concisely and in a timely manner
• Answer the telephone and conduct conversations in a professional manner, always using AIDET with patients and visitors
• Demonstrate competency in appropriately completing a Safety variance report when appropriate
• Follow through on all outstanding tests, procedures, assignments, or tasks and report any incomplete assignments to ensure work is completed without interruption of service
• Consistently use safe work practices including appropriate use of equipment and PPE
• Maintain low error rate
• Show initiative in completing mandatory requirements, training, and educational assignments on time
