About the role

Duties

As a Student Intern (Biological Sciences), you will perform the following duties:

  • Perform a variety of aid and technical assignments in the biological sciences pertaining to the scientific missions of the organization.
  • Collect, sort, and identify biological data on selected fisheries and bycatch samples to record and report on impact of conditions, including vessel operations, environmental conditions and species, mortalities, and injuries.
  • Assist with research projects including the oversight of field data collection and the preparation of drawings, graphs, or charts using project data.
  • Provide support for the production or publication of data bases and data collections.
  • Operate various types of laboratory equipment and computer software associated with reference data programs.
  • Assist in providing administrative support duties, including locating and compiling research data; organizing and maintaining files and records; preparing
  • correspondence, reports, and briefing materials; and responding to general office inquiries.
  • Assist senior staff, project officers, analytical staff, and other staff as necessary.

This position will be filled under the DOC Alternative Personnel System (CAPS). This system replaced the Federal GS pay plan and structure. Under CAPS, positions are classified by career, pay plan and pay band.

The ZT-2 is equivalent to the GS-05/06/07/08 on the Federal General Schedule salary table.

The ideal candidate for this internship is someone who is pursuing at least a bachelor's degree with a major in a biological sciences, agriculture, natural resource management, or chemistry oriented field.

Qualification Requirements:

To qualify at the ZT-2 or GS-05 level:

Completion of 4 academic years of post-high school study leading to a bachelor's degree or equivalent degree in biological sciences, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry, or related disciplines appropriate to the position.
