Optician

About This Role

An Optician is a trained eyewear specialist who interprets prescriptions, assists patients in selecting frames and lenses, takes precise measurements, and ensures that eyewear fits correctly. This role bridges clinical eye care and retail services, providing both technical expertise and patient-centered support. The ideal candidate will possess strong sales skills, demonstrating a high level of knowledge about products and able to recommend accessories or enhancements based on prescription and lifestyle needs.

Responsibilities

• Greet customers and assist with selecting frames based on prescription needs, fit, comfort, and style
• Educate patients on lens materials, coatings, and technologies
• Explain pricing, warranties, and insurance benefits related to eyewear
• Read and interpret prescriptions from optometrists or ophthalmologists
• Take precise optical measurements such as pupillary distance, segment height, multifocal alignment, bridge and temple measurements
• Ensure eyewear fits correctly by adjusting frames for comfort, balance, and proper optical alignment
• Submit and track eyewear orders through in-house or external lab partners
• Inspect completed glasses for accuracy, lens quality, and compliance with prescriptions
• Perform minor repairs and adjustments, including replacing screws, pads, and temples
• Instruct patients on eyewear care, cleaning, and adjustments
• Educate about lens features and expected adaption periods for all lenses, especially progressive or specialized lenses
• Enter eyewear and lens orders into optical software with precise details
• Prepare orders for processing and maintain workflow efficiency
• Maintain accurate patient records and order documentation
• Communicate delays, remakes, and issues with orders
• Assist with inventory and organize lenses, frame parts, chemicals, coatings, and retail supplies
• Contribute to the selection of new inventory from vendors and management of the frame board space
• Participate in all daily huddles and team meetings as scheduled and required
• Follow all safety protocols for equipment, chemicals, and lab procedures; report any concerns to leadership
• Adhere to HIPAA guidelines when handling patient information
• Ensure compliance with optical industry standards
• Maintain positive attitude consisting of cooperation, self-motivation, courtesy, and professionalism
• Contribute to the team effort by completing additional tasks and projects as directed

Requirements

• High School Diploma or equivalent years of related experience required
• Dispensing Optician License required
