Job Introduction
We have an exciting opportunity for an Operator to join our Major Projects South West Maintenance team based from our Taunton depot. In this role, you’ll play a key part in supporting the safe and reliable operation of our overhead steel tower electricity network, up to and including 132kV network across the South West region.
This is a fantastic chance to contribute to essential electricity distribution maintenance while developing your skills within a supportive and dynamic environment.
To apply, you will need to hold English & Maths GCSE (1-9/G-A*) or equivalent qualification deemed to be at the same level in these subjects, such as Functional Skills.
Evidence of your qualifications will be required prior to appointment. Main Responsibilities
As an Operator, you will work alongside a Craftsperson to support the construction, maintenance, replacement and repair of assets up to and including 132kV equipment. You may also be required to carry out asset inspections.
You’ll also completing basic job planning, job bookings, timesheets, and ensuring all documentation is accurate and up to date.
You’ll spend much of your time out in the field — either lone working while undertaking inspections or as part of a team of up to four, predominantly outdoors at steel tower locations. The environment is fast‑paced, hands-on, and requires someone who can act quickly, decisively and responsibly.
Ideal Candidate
Are You Practical, Safety‑conscious And Confident Using Tools? We’re Looking For Someone With Strong Hands-on Ability Who Wants To Learn And Grow. You’ll Bring
- GCSE English and Maths (Grades A–G / 1–9) or an equivalent qualification such as Functional Skills.
- A full UK driving licence and flexibility to travel within the local area.
- Confidence and competence in using tools safely.
- Ideally, some experience in an electrical environment — but don’t worry, full training will be provided.
- Strong organisation and problem‑solving skills.
- A willingness to take part in standby duties when required.
- Excellent safety awareness — following procedures, using protective equipment, and working responsibly within a live operational environment.
- A flexible, team-focused approach.
Please note: For roles involving work at height or the use of fall‑arrest equipment, an upper weight limit of 135kg applies due to equipment safety standards.
