Nursing Assistant - Spinal Cord Injury Float Pool

Duties

The Louis Stokes Cleveland Veterans Affairs Medical Center is recruiting for a Nursing Assistant. The Nursing Assistant will function in the Spinal Cord Injury Float Pool, within Nursing Service. The Nursing Assistant duties include:

• Being a staffing resource to both the SCI Acute and SCI Long term Care units
• Assisting the SCI veteran with all Activities of Daily Living (ADLs) such as bathing, feeding, dressing etc.
• Assisting RN/LPN with other duties as delegated.
• Documenting physical and emotional progress of SCI veteran.
• Providing direct care of the SCI veteran which includes; bowel, foley and ostomy care.
• Utilizing safe patient handling equipment for proper repositioning and/or transferring of the SCI veterans.
• Participating in safety huddle and bedside rounds.
• Taking/documenting vital signs, blood sugar checks, weights, range of motion, intake and output reporting abnormal values immediately to covering nurse.
• Ensuring the SCI veteran gets to all appointments timely.
• Providing purposeful hourly rounding.
• Participating in Interdisciplinary Team (IDT) meetings.
• Maintaining a safe, clean and organized home like environment for SCI Veteran.

Work Schedule: Day shift 7:30am - 8:00pm, 7:30am- 4:00pm and 3:30pm to 12:00am required rotating weekends and holidays to meet unit/staffing needs. Relocation Expenses: Relocation expenses are not authorized for this position.

Qualifications

BASIC REQUIREMENTS

Citizenship: Citizen of the United States.

Education or Training: One year above high school with courses related to the NA occupation. Completion of an intensive, specialized, occupation-related course of study of less than one year as a nursing assistant may also meet in full the experience requirements for GS-3.

Grandfathering Provisions: All Nursing Assistants employed in VHA effective 3/26/14 or prior are considered to have met all qualification requirements for the series and grade held that are part of the basic requirements of the occupation.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

• State Tested Nurses Aide (STNA)
• Basic Life Support (BLS) certified.

GRADE REQUIREMENTS

Quality of Experience: To be creditable, NA experience must be documented on the application or resume and verified in an employment reference, or through other independent means.

Part-Time Experience: Part-time experience as a NA is creditable according to its relationship to the full-time work week. For example, a NA employed 20 hours a week, or on a 1/2-time basis, would receive 1 full-time work week of credit for each 2 weeks of service.

GRADE DETERMINATIONS:

To qualify at the GS-3 Level: No requirements beyond the basic requirements.

To qualify at the GS-4 level: One year of specialized experience as a NA or experience in another medical field (licensed practical nurse, health technician, hospital corpsman, etc.), performing technical and nursing skills requiring knowledge of the human physical and emotional states, therapeutic communication, and technical skills required for basic and intermediate treatments;

OR

Successful completion of 2 years above high school in an accredited institution with courses related to nursing care, health care or in a field of study appropriate to the specialization of the position, such as education in a program for psychology, psychiatric, or operating room technicians.

To qualify at the GS-5 level:

One year of progressively responsible assignments and experience equivalent to the GS-4 level which demonstrates knowledge, skills, and abilities that are directly related to the specific assignment.

OR

Successful completion of a 4-year course of study above high school leading to a bachelor's degree that included 24 semester hours of courses related to health care or possession of a bachelor's degree.

Grade Determinations are based upon the VA Qualification Standards which can be found in VA Handbook 5005/81, Part II, Appendix G46.
