Nurse Educator

About This Role

This night-shift post on the cardiac ward pairs patient care with mentoring new nurses. The Nurse Educator acts as an education resource for nursing staff in clinical areas, providing visible, accessible clinical support. Using specialized theory and knowledge, the educator develops, implements, and evaluates a range of formal and informal educational programs and learning plans for nursing staff, including individual and group learning assessments and opportunities. The role involves consulting, conferring, and collaborating with others to promote continuous quality improvement, resolve clinical education issues, and coordinate activities for progressive educational and clinical practice programs.

Responsibilities

• Evaluate individual and group educational requirements through observation, discussion, and analysis of competency data and quality indicators
• Design, implement, and evaluate formal and informal learning programs in collaboration with clinical leaders
• Coach and mentor staff and preceptors, create individualized growth plans, and report progress to leadership
• Act as a clinical resource, apply diverse teaching strategies, and adjust learning plans based on staff progress
• Maintain current, peer-reviewed, best-practice educational materials and collaborate with other educators to ensure quality and relevance
• Participate in student clinical experiences and coordinate preceptor assignments with leadership
• Assist teams in resolving ethical and conflict situations using advanced communication and educational strategies
• Review and recommend updates to policies, participate in research, quality improvement, and risk-management initiatives, and integrate research findings into practice
• Contribute to hospital-wide committees, develop cross-unit educational programs, and teach multidisciplinary team members
• Document educational activities, maintain databases, provide reports, and advise on space, equipment, and staffing needs

Requirements

• Registration with the BC College of Nurses and Midwives as a practicing RN registrant
• Three (3) years recent related nursing experience in the designated clinical area of specialty including one year of experience (or training) in areas such as teaching, leadership, mentoring and preceptoring, facilitating group processes, team building, orientation/education program design, development, implementation and evaluation
• Demonstrated knowledge and ability to perform Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) procedures appropriate for the area of service
• Ability to teach, coach, provide clinical guidance, and serve as a role model for conflict resolution
• Experience with identifying learning needs, creating educational programs, and developing resource and instructional materials grounded in adult-learning principles
