About the role

Duties
This position requires a considerable amount of independent judgment to coordinate program activities that affect clinical, research, teaching and administrative functions. Serves as the Chief Nuclear Medicine Technologist in the Nuclear Medicine section of the Radiology Service. As the Chief Nuclear Medicine Technologist your duties may include but are not limited:

  • Responsible for the personnel management program administration.
  • Ensures that the Radiology service's goals, objectives and work plans are carried out and communicated to the Nuclear Medicine team.
  • Serves as the liaison with all levels of management, executes actions which will guarantee high quality imaging, monitors technologists' performances.
  • Plans and schedules work for the group to ensure proper distribution of assignments and supervises the preparation of radiopharmaceuticals for administration to the patients.
  • Supervises and provides instructions to the Nuclear Medicine Technology students and trains new employees.
  • Maintains liaison with physicians, research personnel and staff to resolve problems and provides advice concerning Nuclear Medicine procedures, techniques, equipment.
  • Develops, recommends and implements new procedures and techniques to improve patient care and assists in the technological development of research programs.
  • Supervises, coordinates and participates in technical activities, the calculation of results, the maintenance, review, and application of computer programs.
  • Develops and implements quality assurance programs relating to calibration and the maintenance of equipment.
  • Recommends various personnel actions including, but not limited to, hiring, performance appraisals, promotions and vacation schedules.
  • Directs the personnel management program for the service, including matters involving the full range of human resources requirements.
  • Authors and updates staff technologists' functional statements, performance standards and competencies, evaluates and documents performance and competencies of subordinates including disciplinary actions.

Qualifications
Basic Requirements:

  • U.S. citizenship. Non-citizens may be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
  • Certification.
    All applicants must be certified in nuclear medicine technology by the Nuclear Medicine Technology Certification Board (NMTCB) or American Registry of Radiologic Technology (ARRT). NMTCB or ARRT (N) certification eligibility requirements are normally satisfied by one of the following: graduation from an educational program in nuclear medicine technology accredited by the Committee on Allied Health Education and Accreditation; or national certification as a registered medical technologist or registered radiologic technologist; or a bachelor's or associate's degree in one of the physical or biological sciences, and 4 years of clinical NMT experience
  • English Language Proficiency. Nuclear medicine technologists must be proficient in spoken and written English in accordance with chapter 2, section D, paragraph 5a, this part.

Experience: Completion of 1 year experience equivalent to the next lower grade level directly related to the position to be filled, i.e., experience that demonstrates possession of the knowledge, skills, abilities, and other characteristics needed to provide nuclear medicine technology and administrative services, and must fully meet the KSAs at that level. This experience must have provided the candidate with an in-depth knowledge of common and uncommon nuclear medicine procedures, in-depth knowledge of radiation safety practices, and knowledge of staffing levels, financial management, personnel management, and supply management.
Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience
In addition, the candidate must demonstrate the following professional KSAs and demonstrate the potential to acquire the assignment specific KSAs as designated by an asterisk (*):

  • Ability to assign and evaluate work of subordinate staff as well as resolve problems that may interfere with the delivery of nuclear medicine services by staff members;
  • Skill in providing complex nuclear medicine patient procedures.
  • Ability to develop and initiate new protocols which apply to current research findings.
  • Skill in providing administrative reports to management orally and in writing.
  • Ability to interview candidates for positions in the section; recommend appointments, advancements, or, when appropriate, disciplinary actions; evaluate performance; and identify continuing education and training needs.
