About This Role
This role for an experienced reporter expands coverage throughout western Colorado, focusing on local stories with a documentary treatment and impact-driven reports for public media. The journalist will balance written stories with video, experiment with formats, and champion stories from underrepresented communities.
Responsibilities
- Conduct daily responsive reporting covering Western Slope communities, including Grand Junction, and special projects around Colorado when required
- Write stories, shoot and edit video packages, and take photographs for multiple platforms
- Develop beat coverage with a deep understanding of story mix and consistent coverage of important stories and follow-ups for accountability
- Grow coverage by engaging with communities and maintaining relationships with sources
- Manage simultaneous short- and long-term projects and regular deadlines
- Use solid news judgment to recognize relevant and engaging stories
- Actively participate in RMPM's Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) training program and maintain high standards of ethical behavior
- Shoot and edit video assets, including working with production on full-feature documentaries, social media dispatches, and interviews, while following PBS, NPR, and FCC technical standards
- Collaborate with outside media partners and RMPM departments on projects and initiatives
- Attend weekly editorial pitch meetings to stay up-to-date on overall newsroom coverage, receive deadline assignments, and identify potential collaborations
- Keep track of miles traveled, meals, and hotel accommodations for budget and expense reporting
- Monitor hours for work completed as part of grants
- Maintain a spirit of curiosity, experimentation, and creativity in trying out new formats and projects
- Perform other tasks as assigned and/or required
Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in journalism or relevant field
- 3-5 years of experience in journalism and deadline environments
- Excellent skills in news writing and editing for publication
- Experienced and adept in video production and video editing
- Demonstrated expertise in using Adobe Creative Cloud software
- Familiar and comfortable creating content for social media
