Multimedia Journalist

About This Role

Working with the Cape Breton Post newsroom, the Multimedia Journalist will report on news and current events in Cape Breton, with a particular focus on the Cape Breton Regional Municipality (CBRM) and surrounding communities. This role suits a candidate who can break news, write longer news features and explanatory pieces, and has excellent news judgment and an understanding of issues that impact Cape Breton.

Responsibilities

• Report and write stories with a CBRM focus for print, web, and mobile audiences, tailoring content to meet the varying needs of those platforms
• Initiate and develop ideas for enterprise stories and investigative projects
• Cultivate sources and establish expertise to break stories and set the news agenda
• File video clips for digital platforms
• Work with digital teams to create interactive maps and graphics, searchable databases, and other multimedia elements

Requirements

• Previous experience at a news organization
• Fluency in digital platforms, multimedia journalism, and social media
• Ability to work quickly and independently, meet multiple deadlines, and make efficient decisions
• Strong understanding of issues, industries, and attributes unique to Cape Breton
• Ability to work remotely as part of a newsroom team
• Possess a valid driver’s licence and vehicle

Nice to have:

• Familiarity with data journalism and investigative reporting
