About This Role
This mortgage underwriter role involves evaluating loan applications for eligibility and risk, ensuring compliance with company policies and industry regulations. The position requires a strong understanding of various loan products, including non-QM loans, and experience with loan origination systems like Encompass.
Responsibilities
- Review and analyze mortgage loan applications, supporting documentation, and credit reports to assess borrower eligibility
- Evaluate all types of loan products, including conventional, government-backed, and non-QM loans, ensuring accurate risk assessment
- Utilize Encompass or comparable loan origination software to process and underwrite loans efficiently
- Ensure all loan files meet internal standards as well as federal and state regulatory requirements
- Make informed underwriting decisions based on borrower information, property details, and market conditions
- Collaborate with loan officers, processors, and other stakeholders to resolve any issues or discrepancies during the underwriting process
- Maintain thorough documentation of all underwriting decisions for audit purposes and quality control
- Stay current on industry trends, regulatory changes, and best practices related to mortgage underwriting
Requirements
- Proven experience as a Mortgage Underwriter or similar role within a mortgage lending environment
- Familiarity with all loan products, including non-QM loans
- Extensive experience working with Encompass or comparable loan origination systems
- Strong knowledge of federal and state mortgage regulations and compliance standards
- Excellent analytical skills with the ability to assess risk accurately and make sound decisions under tight deadlines
- Effective communication skills for collaborating with team members and explaining underwriting decisions clearly
