About the role

The National Mental Health Corps is a national mental health workforce development program that engages universities, school districts, health care systems, and other community-based organizations across the nation to support widespread implementation of evidence-based mental health-focused gatekeeper trainings, including Mental Health First Aid, QPR, and SafeTALK. There is a sense of urgency in South Carolina, and across the country, to improve awareness, recognition, and the ability to respond to the needs of those experiencing symptoms of mental illness. These gatekeeper trainings and programs provide communities with the tools to better respond to mental health care needs. AmeriCorps volunteers improve their host site’s capacity to address mental health needs in their community through service. During their one-year service term, AmeriCorps volunteers are trained as instructors in an identified gatekeeper training and provide certification classes for community members.

Member Duties : As a National Mental Health Corps AmeriCorps Volunteer, you'll help bring mental health education, awareness, and support directly into the community. Volunteers will play a key role in expanding Mental Health First Aid and other evidence-based mental health initiatives, helping individuals gain the knowledge and skills to recognize mental health challenges and support those around them. Through community outreach, presentations, workshops, and special events, members will work to reduce stigma, promote mental wellness, and connect people with local resources. Volunteers will collaborate with community organizations, health providers, and local partners to strengthen mental health support systems while gaining hands-on experience in public health, program development, community engagement, and mental health advocacy. This is an opportunity to make a meaningful difference while helping build healthier, more resilient communities.
