About This Role

This Medical Coder role offers an opportunity to join a leading, award-winning eye care practice. The core of the job involves reviewing medical records and documentation to assign accurate codes, ensuring compliance with guidelines and standards.

Responsibilities

• Review medical records, provider documentation, and encounter notes to assign accurate ICD-10-CM, CPT, and HCPCS codes, as applicable
• Ensure coding accuracy, completeness, and compliance with applicable coding guidelines, payer requirements, and regulatory standards
• Review documentation to identify missing, incomplete, or inconsistent information that may affect code assignment
• Identify discrepancies between clinical documentation and assigned codes and communicate with providers or appropriate staff to obtain clarification when needed
• Apply current coding guidelines and payer-specific requirements to ophthalmology and other applicable specialty services
• Review coding edits, identify potential errors, and make appropriate corrections before claims are submitted
• Research coding questions, denials related to coding, and documentation issues to determine appropriate resolutions
• Stay current on changes to coding guidelines, payer policies, and regulatory requirements
• Assist with coding audits and quality assurance reviews to promote accuracy and consistency
• Maintain accurate, organized, and confidential coding records in accordance with HIPAA and organizational policies
• Collaborate with providers and other departments to support accurate documentation and coding practices
• Perform additional duties as assigned

Requirements

• Minimum of two years medical coding experience
• Current Certified Professional Coder (CPC) certification
• Knowledge of ICD-10-CM, CPT, and HCPCS coding systems
• Understanding of medical terminology, anatomy, and clinical documentation
• Familiarity with coding compliance requirements and payer-specific coding guidelines
• Ability to interpret medical records and assign appropriate codes based on provider documentation
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills
• Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
• Excellent time management skills, with a proven ability to meet deadlines
• Ability to function well in a fast-paced and, at times, stressful environment
