Medical Billing and Coding Instructor

About This Role

This part-time contract position involves guiding students through a 20-week online program that prepares them for the Certified Professional Coder (CPC) certification exam. The instructor will deliver primarily asynchronous instruction, feedback, and student support for the Medical Billing and Coding Program.

Responsibilities

• Deliver instruction aligned with the program curriculum and current CPC exam content
• Guide students through medical coding topics, including ICD-10-CM, CPT, and HCPCS
• Prepare or adapt weekly assignments, assessments, case studies, and learning materials in coordination with the Program Manager
• Review student work and provide clear, timely feedback
• Monitor student progress and engagement, identify concerns, and communicate with students and CPE staff to support completion
• Provide exam preparation through review materials, practice coding scenarios, and study guidance
• Lead synchronous sessions when scheduled; record sessions for students who cannot attend live
• Record grades, assignment completion, engagement, and student outreach in the designated learning management system
• Maintain student confidentiality and follow applicable UTC policies and program procedures
• Participate in program meetings, professional development, and course improvement activities
• Complete other duties related to the course as agreed with the Program Manager

Requirements

• Current, active Certified Professional Coder (CPC) credential in good standing with AAPC
• At least five years of professional medical coding experience relevant to the instruction provided
• AAPC Certified Approved Instructor status before teaching AAPC curriculum (candidates who do not yet hold this status may be considered if they meet AAPC’s eligibility requirements and obtain approval before instruction begins)
• Strong knowledge of ICD-10-CM, CPT, and HCPCS coding systems
• Ability to explain complex coding concepts clearly in writing and conversation
• Strong organizational skills and the ability to meet grading, communication, and reporting deadlines
• Proficiency with learning management systems and online course platforms

Nice to have:

• Experience teaching or training adults
• Experience teaching medical coding, billing, or healthcare courses online or in person
• Familiarity with adult learning principles and online instruction
• Experience with healthcare documentation, coding audits, or compliance
• Additional relevant AAPC credentials or specialty certifications
• Spanish-English bilingual skills
