About This Role
Spear AI is seeking an experienced Mechanical Engineer with maritime experience to join a cross-functional team focused on designing, building, testing, and deploying unmanned maritime sensor systems. This role is ideal for someone who enjoys hands-on work in both lab and maritime environments.
Responsibilities
- Mentor junior engineers and technicians
- Design and document mechanical systems, optimizing for compliance and various factors
- Create systems for operational maritime use, ensuring they survive in challenging environments
- Produce Mechanical CAD artifacts, including drawings and documentation
- Select and document appropriate manufacturing processes, focusing on distributed and low-tech manufacturing
- Design parts for additive manufacturing and optimize testing regimens for these parts
- Build, test, and troubleshoot prototypes, actively participating in the initial phases of prototypes
- Develop documentation and procedures for transitioning manufacturing processes to technicians
- Plan and participate in operational testing, including field testing at sea
- Incorporate feedback from assembly and field technicians to improve system performance and reliability
Requirements
- BS in Mechanical Engineering or Naval Architecture with a minimum of 5+ years of relevant experience, or a minimum of 10 years of highly relevant experience in a design role
- Prior maritime design experience
- Familiarity with standard mechanical engineering tools and processes, with Solidworks preferred
- Extensive hands-on experience with prototyping, testing, and design refinement
- Strong written and verbal communication skills for a high-performing development team
- Ability to participate in at-sea deployment and test operations, including physical tasks
- Willingness to obtain a Secret or Top Secret/SCI security clearance
Nice to have:
- Experience with small boats and at-sea operations
- Experience with Unmanned Systems (UxS)
