Masonry Worker

Duties

Incumbent performs various masonry tasks in the stabilization and rehabilitation of structures. As directed by the supervisor and or work leader, mixes soils, water, and amendments for mortars as prescribed; removes damaged portions of walls or other similar architectural features in preparation for repair of damage, stabilization and original fabric; caps, resets, respalls, grouts and reinforces walls. Loads and unloads cement, soil, stone, tools and equipment, and stacks and handles stone building materials and supplies. Prepares mortar and mixes with appropriate percentages of sand, soil, and chemical additives. Operates GSA and park motor vehicles including a 4 x 4 pickup, Cushman or other appropriate undersized vehicles, field tractor, bobcat, and power wheelbarrows. Operates snow blowers, weed eaters, chain saws, and other small equipment as required.

Physical Demands: Incumbent often lifts objects weighing over 50 pounds, unassisted. Frequently stands while working and must frequently climb ladders and scaffolds from 6 to 40 feet. Bending, stooping, climbing and working in awkward positions are regularly required.

Work Environment: Work is outdoors in all kinds of weather ranging from 20 degrees below zero Fahrenheit to over 100 degrees Fahrenheit at elevations over 6000 feet. Subject to danger of falling from ladders or scaffolding. May be exposed to dust and dirt while mixing mortar, removing damaged portions of walls, and while handling various masonry materials. Frequently works around heavy equipment and vehicles.

Area Information/Housing Information: Colorado National Monument, located on the Western Slope of Colorado, preserves one of the grandest landscapes of the American West. Historic Rim Rock Drive offers 23 miles of breathtaking panoramic views and 19 overlooks in the monument. More than 43 miles of trails lead across mesa tops and to spectacular overlooks and backcountry canyons. The monument has more than 700,000 visitors annually and it provides many recreational uses for them such as bicycling along Rim Rock Drive, camping in the 80-site campground, hiking, rock climbing, and picnicking. The monument is in close proximity to the towns of Fruita (7 miles) and Grand Junction (17 miles). The surrounding area has a population of approximately 150,000 people. Most community and commercial facilities are located in Grand Junction, including Mesa State College, several hospitals, shopping facilities and churches. The climate is dry, high desert with summer daytime temperatures ranging from 85 to 100 degrees Fahrenheit and winter daytime temperatures ranging from 30 to 45 degrees. Winter overnight lows occasionally drop below zero.

Qualifications

All qualifications must be met by the closing date of this announcement, Thursday, June 08, 2017. Qualifying experience may be obtained in the private or public sectors.

Qualifications: To be eligible for this position, you must possess the qualifying specialized experience and/or education as well as selective factors as described in the occupational/assessment questionnaire and as outlined below.

Applicants must be physically fit and must possess the knowledge, skills, and abilities of the elements listed in Section 25 of the Online Occupational Questionnaire to perform the duties of the position at the level for which they are applying. A specific length of time and experience is not required; however you must be able to demonstrate through experience shown in your written application, that you possess sufficient knowledge, skill and ability to perform the duties of the position without more than normal supervision. Specialized experience that demonstrates the ability to mix soils, water, and amendments for mortars as prescribed; remove damaged portions of walls or other similar architectural features in preparation for repair of damage, stabilization and original fabric; implement prescribed treatments (capping, veneering, reappointing, resetting, new laying, etc.); operates trucks up to one ton capacity and pulls utility trailers. All qualification requirements must be met by the closing date of this announcement.
