This manufacturing technician role involves assembling, repairing, modifying, and fabricating parts and components for tools, machines, fixtures, prototypes, and production equipment. The technician uses machining and fabrication equipment and supports both Engineering and Production teams in various capacities, ensuring finished parts meet quality and safety standards.
Responsibilities
Set up and operate conventional, special-purpose, and CNC machines to fabricate metallic and nonmetallic parts
Apply knowledge of machine shop theory and procedures, shop mathematics, machinability of materials, and layout techniques
Study blueprints, engineering drawings, sketches, CAD models, manuals, specifications, or sample parts to determine dimensions and tolerances, sequence of operations, material requirements, and setup requirements
Support Engineering in the fabrication, assembly, modification, and testing of R&D prototypes, fixtures, jigs, tooling, test equipment, and one-off components
Work from engineering drawings, CAD models, sketches, sample parts, and verbal direction to develop practical fabrication and machining solutions for prototype and production needs
Use computer-aided manufacturing (CAM) software to create and modify programs for CNC mills, lathes, and other CNC equipment
Understand G-code structure and review, edit, and troubleshoot CNC programs as required
Calculate and set machining parameters such as speeds, feeds, coolant flow, depth of cut, tooling, and workholding requirements
Set up and operate CNC and manual machines and perform trial runs to verify machine settings, tooling, workholding, programs, and finished-part accuracy
Fabricate prototype and production components using machining, welding, cutting, forming, bending, punching, grinding, drilling, rolling, and other metalworking processes
Perform MIG and TIG welding, fitting, grinding, and general metal fabrication as required for prototypes, fixtures, tooling, repairs, and production support
Set up and operate applicable sheet-metal fabrication equipment such as press brakes, punch presses, lasers, shears, saws, and related machinery after appropriate training
Troubleshoot, repair, modify, and fabricate production tooling, dies, fixtures, jigs, and machine components
Verify dimensions, alignment, clearances, and functionality and make adjustments or corrections as necessary
Use precision measuring instruments such as calipers, micrometers, height gauges, gauge blocks, dial indicators, and other inspection equipment to verify that parts meet drawings and specifications
Perform inspection of fabricated and machined components throughout the manufacturing process to verify dimensions, tolerances, fit, and function
Assist Engineering and Production in identifying practical manufacturing methods and provide feedback regarding machinability, fabrication methods, tooling, workholding, material selection, and design-for-manufacturing considerations
