Manager, Systems Development Engineer

About This Role

This role involves leading the strategy and operations of physical infrastructure essential for development, testing, and demonstrations within Google's Systems Development Engineering (SDE). You will guide a team to deploy secure, scalable hardware environments integrated with CI/CD workflows, driving technical roadmaps and empowering engineering innovation. The position focuses on automating mundane tasks, reducing toil, and developing tools and solutions for classes of problems, with an emphasis on observability and operational efficiency.

Responsibilities

• Lead the strategy and operations of physical infrastructure essential for development, testing, and demonstrations
• Guide a team to deploy secure, scalable hardware environments integrated with CI/CD workflows
• Drive technical roadmaps and empower engineering innovation
• Automate mundane tasks and reduce toil
• Develop tools and solutions that fix classes of problems
• Focus on observability, instrumenting first, then turning data into knowledge, and finally knowledge into action

Requirements

• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or IT-related field, or equivalent practical experience
• 8 years of experience with system design
• 5 years of experience with managing technical work, driving engineering strategy and roadmap
• 5 years of experience managing or leading a team
• 3 years of experience with organizational design

Nice to have:

• Experience managing high-performing engineering teams and driving complex, multi-site technical projects from end-to-end
• Experience designing, implementing, and maintaining secure lab environments, including optimizing physical infrastructure and deploying automated management systems
• Experience establishing operational standards, troubleshooting critical end-to-end system issues, and mentoring engineers to foster technical growth
• Knowledge of how to build, scale, and modernize complex distributed systems, high-density compute platforms, and hardware architectures
• Ability to partner seamlessly with cross-functional engineering teams to translate complex requirements into technical roadmaps, capacity plans, and tailored infrastructure solutions
