About the role: The Software Engineering Manager is an engineering leader and people manager accountable for outcomes across multiple teams and/or a significant technical excellence capabilities. They can set direction, establish standards, and create the environment for multiple teams to succeed through strong leadership, governance, and operational discipline. The role owns delivery, quality, reliability, security, compliance, and the engineering operating model for their area leading through other leaders to build a high-performing, inclusive, and scalable engineering organization. Through their direct team, ensures effective architectural and structural design oversight to deliver reliable products and determining the technical feasibility of future development projects. Accountable for ensuring strong management to oversee and continuously improve the quality, service, and efficiency of staff, products, and processes. Follows and enforces necessary compliance.

Requirements:

  • Typically possesses 5 to 10 years of relevant software engineering management work experience, leading organizations of 15-50 people with up to 5-8 direct reports.

  • Experience leading multiple teams onshore/nearshore/offshore in distributed or co-sourced staffing models.

  • Experience in developing and evolving 2-3 large scale platforms and global businesses.

  • Strong organizational and project planning, time management, and change management skills across functional groups.

  • Experienced in evaluating and participating in competitive analysis of 3rd party software and services.

  • A polyglot with a wide range of experience in different technologies and systems.

  • Strong interpersonal communication and presentation skills.

  • Advanced knowledge of agile software development methodologies (Scrum, XP, Pair programming, 3-Amigos, DevSecOps).

  • Good knowledge of architecture frameworks and principles.

  • Strong knowledge of SOA, DDD, and software-as-a-service.

  • Broad knowledge of Continuous Testing, TDD / BDD, Integration Tests, Performance Scalability Testing, Instrumentation (Logging, monitoring, alerting, metrics, health checks).

  • Strong knowledge of OWASP Top 10, Security Privacy By Design, SAST/DAST, Encryption, TLS, Secure Coding, Threat Modelling.

  • Strong knowledge of cloud-based hosting, IaC, Immutable Infrastructure, and container solutions, and cost/efficiency optimizations.

  • Strong knowledge of Continuous Integration, Continuous Deployment, Source Control, Build Orchestration, Artifact Repositories, Static Analysis, green-blue deployments, and canary releases.

  • Strong organizational, planning, and problem-solving skills.

  • Good knowledge of Big Data solutions, Analytics, and Data Governance and Quality.

Responsibilities

Engineering Leadership Culture

  • Lead, mentor, and develop Engineering Leads and Senior Engineers; build leadership capability and succession plans.
  • Own recruitment strategy, onboarding, performance management, and workforce planning across teams.
  • Make recommendations for hiring decisions. Evaluate staff providing performance feedback, coaching, and instrumental in motivating staff.
  • Build and sustain a psychologically safe, inclusive, high-performance culture across multiple teams.
  • Act as an escalation point for people, delivery, and technical issues.
  • Act as a liaison between the engineering team and other teams (and management) to promote organization-wide collaboration.
  • Encourage a culture of innovation and continuous improvement within the engineering team.
  • Ensure that the team follows high standards of quality in their work.
  • Help shape an engineering strategy aligned to product and business objectives.
  • Translate business goals into clear engineering investment themes.
  • Design and evolve team topology to optimize flow and reduce dependencies. Team structure, staffing, and leadership appointments within the area.
  • Establish governance mechanisms that scale across teams.
  • Own budget inputs and cost-to-serve trade-offs for the engineering area.

Product Delivery Excellence

  • Own delivery outcomes across multiple teams including predictability, throughput, and quality.
  • Partner with Product and Architecture, monitor organizational and industry updates, to shape roadmaps and priorities.
  • Manage cross-team dependencies, risks, and senior stakeholder reporting.
  • Improve developer experience through tooling, process, and platform improvements.
  • Ensure compliance with security, privacy, and operational controls.
  • Maintain a risk register covering delivery, technical, operational, and people risks.
  • Own engineering metrics and dashboards and use them to drive corrective action.
  • Engineering investment trade-offs and prioritization decisions.

Technical Excellence Innovation

  • Set and enforce technical standards across architecture, security, quality, and DevOps.
  • Ensure long-term health of the technical estate including modernization and debt management.
  • Provide architectural oversight and validate technical feasibility of future initiatives.
  • Audit best practices, standards, robustness, technical checks/validations, and metrics within a team or functional area and work to improve.
  • Work on components/solutions often affecting multiple systems; designing larger scale solutions across business domains.
  • Innovate in the context of delivering significant business value.
  • Advanced problem solving and leading/coordinating people across teams as necessary to troubleshoot/diagnose complex project issues and get beyond symptoms to identifying root causes.

Operational Excellence

  • Ensure operational readiness, reliability, monitoring, and incident management practices.
  • Own disaster recovery and business continuity planning.
  • Drive continuous improvement of engineering and operational processes.
  • Collaborate with the Operations team to actively manage cloud, platform, and vendor costs.
  • Manage vendor and partner performance against agreed outcomes.
