Duties
The individual selected for this position will:
- Set up, adjust, operate and monitor basic mail processing equipment to prepare a variety of material for mailing;
- Set-up, operate and maintain basic mail processing equipment, including, but not limited to, an inserter, a variety of automatic labeling equipment, friction feed folder, vacuum feed folder, binder, punch, paper drill, power cutter, wire closer, and sealer;
- Inspect items during flow for proper sequence, torn pages, loose mailing labels, proper address position, etc. to assure quality of work processed;
- Record the count of materials passing through the equipment;
- Diagnose machine malfunctions, perform corrective adjustments, perform operator maintenance and periodic inspections or servicing, and perform minor repairs.
Qualifications
You qualify at the grade 4 level if you possess one year of general experience that equips you with the skills needed to perform the job duties. Examples include progressively responsible clerical, office, or other work that indicates ability to acquire the particular knowledge and skills needed to perform the duties of a Mail Processing Equipment Operator.
Education Substitution: Successful completion of 2 full years of study above the high school level in an accredited business, secretarial or technical school, college, or university may be substituted for the required experience.
One year of full-time academic study is defined as 30 semester hours, 45 quarter hours, or the equivalent in a college or university, or at least 20 hours of classroom instruction per week for approximately 36 weeks in a business, secretarial, or technical school.
Combining Education and Experience: Equivalent combinations of successfully completed post-high school education and experience may be used to meet total experience requirements at grade GS-4.
Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., PeaceCorps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations, (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
