Machinists set up and operate machines and precision hand tools to cut, shape, and finish various materials for the manufacture, remanufacture, assembly, installation, and repair of vehicle and equipment parts and components. This role involves working with ferrous and non-ferrous metals, plastics, and other exotic materials.
Responsibilities
Set up and operate machine and precision hand tools to fit, manufacture, or repair vehicle parts or mechanisms or other related vehicle components, such as transmissions, pumps, differentials, compressors, blowers
Disassemble, repair, and reassemble components and equipment to ensure adherence to precision alignment and close tolerance requirements
Operate lathe for turning, shaping, and finishing shafts, axles, pins, pulleys, and gear for forming flat end surfaces, collars, shoulders, and cylindrical surfaces; cutting screw threads; and drilling, reaming, tapping, and bruling a variety of work pieces
Operate milling machines to produce, flat, curved, and irregular surfaces for slots, grooves, keyways, dovetails, spines, flutes, cams, and gears
Clean parts, before and after machining, to remove grease, rust stains, and other foreign matters
Work from blueprints, sketches, engineering drawings, damaged parts, or description of parts to be replaced to determine dimensions and tolerances of parts to be manufactured, sequence of operations, and tools, materials, and machines required
Verify dimensions of finished products, using Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T), measuring instruments such as micrometers, calipers, and dial indicators, to ensure adherence to specifications
Utilize Computer Aided Design and Computer Aided Manufacturing (CAD/CAM) software to operate Computer Numerical Control (CNC) machines
