MACHINIST

Duties

MAJOR JOB DUTIES:

·    Manufactures, repairs, and rebuilds parts and items of equipment from raw stock of different metals and metal alloys through the use of conventional and/or computer numerical control (CNC) machine tools and precision handwork.

·    Sets up and operates a variety of conventional and/or computer numerical control (CNC) machines.

·    Uses a variety of precision instruments and equipment.

·    Utilizes safety practices and procedures following established safety rules and regulations and maintains a safe and clean work environment, and performs Production Acceptance Certification (PAC) program duties.  

Qualifications

SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: At least one (1) year of specialized experience at the next lower grade or equivalent. Specialized experience must include operating computer numerical control (CNC) machine tools to perform assigned machining operations, manufacture, repair and rebuild parts and items of equipment from raw stock of different metal alloys through the use of CNC machine tools and precision handwork.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSA's):

1. Knowledge of a variety of conventional or computer numerical control (CNC) machine tool such as lathes; vertical and horizontal boring mills; bench, plain, and universal milling machines; shapers; planer; internal and external grinders; thread cutters; and radial drills.  

2. Knowledge of a variety of machine tool attachments such as rotary vises, magnetic chucks, vertical milling heads, angular drive heads, taper attachments, rotary tables, and others.

3. Knowledge of various metals and other materials such as aluminum, brass, bronze, high carbon and alloy steels, chrome, nickel, titanium, nylon, rubber, plastics and teflons.  

4. Knowledge of trade mathematics including plane geometry, the use of trigonometric functions, and machinist handbook formulas.  

5. Knowledge of safety regulations, practices, and procedures.  

6. Skill in setting up and operating a variety of machine tools, and skill in debugging programs developed by others.
