Position Overview

Our client is a small, collaborative civil litigation law firm seeking one or more Associate Litigation Associate Attorney This opportunity is ideal for an attorney who has established litigation experience and wants greater responsibility for litigation strategy, courtroom work, and client relationships. The firm offers a flexible work environment, strong mentorship, and a focus on work-life balance with no minimum billable-hour requirement.

Candidates with experience in both family and civil litigation are especially encouraged to apply, although experience in both areas is not required.

Key Responsibilities

  • Handle basic family law and/or civil litigation matters from start to finish.
  • Represent clients in Virginia state courts and participate in courtroom proceedings and trials.
  • Draft pleadings, motions, discovery, correspondence, and other legal documents.
  • Conduct legal research and develop case strategies.
  • Handle discovery and assist clients in evaluating settlement options.
  • Prepare for and participate in hearings, negotiations, and trials.
  • Communicate directly with clients regarding case strategy and legal matters.
  • Work collaboratively with supervising attorneys while independently managing assigned matters.
  • Maintain high-quality legal representation for clients from diverse backgrounds.

Required Qualifications

  • J.D. from an accredited law school.
  • Active Virginia Bar License required.
  • 3+ years of litigation experience in Virginia state courts preferred.
  • Demonstrated courtroom and trial experience.
  • Ability to handle a basic litigation matter from beginning to end.
  • Strong legal research, writing, and analytical skills.
  • Excellent client communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work independently with limited supervision.
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to manage multiple matters and deadlines.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience litigating in D.C. courts.
  • Spanish-language proficiency.
  • Guardian ad litem certification.
  • Interest in legal writing, including blogs and other legal publications.
  • Experience in both family law and civil litigation.

Ideal Candidate

The ideal candidate is a self-motivated and confident litigator who already has baseline courtroom experience and is ready to take greater ownership of litigation strategy and client relationships.

The firm is open to candidates with more or less than three years of experience depending on the quality and depth of their litigation background. More experienced attorneys may be considered for a higher-level opportunity.
