Duties

Major Duties:

  • Provides frontline customers service at circulation desk.
  • Explains basic library use.
  • Shelves and files library materials.
  • Plans, organizes and executes library programs and events.
  • Organizes publicity and advertising for events.
  • Follows established library techniques and methods to perform copy cataloging duties.

Qualifications

Experience required:

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social).  You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

To qualify based on your experience, your resume must describe at least one year of experience which prepared you to do the work in this job.  Specialized experience is defined as: utilizing automated computer systems and programs, locating information and assisting customers with routine inquiries, maintaining appearance of the library and circulation, book shelving, retrieving and disseminating library materials. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service GS-04.

 

You will be evaluated on the basis of your level of competency (knowledge, skills, abilities) in the following areas:

  • Knowledge of Circulation Desk Duties
  • Skill in Customer Service
  • Ability to effectively Communicate Orally
  • Ability to Utilize Office Equipment and Automation Software Applicants

 

Time in Grade Requirement: Applicants who have held a General Schedule (GS) position within the last 52 weeks must have 52 weeks of Federal service at the GS-04 grade (or equivalent).

Education

Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify.  For this job, you may qualify if your education meets the definitions below:

Education: Completed 4 years above high school.  This education must have been obtained in an accredited business, secretarial or technical school, junior college, or college or university.  One year of full-time academic study is defined as 30 semester hours, 45 quarter hours, or the equivalent in a college or university, or at least 20 hours of classroom instruction per week for approximately 36 weeks in a business, secretarial, or technical school.  (Note: You must attached a copy of your transcripts.)

Combining Education and Experience: Have some specialized experience as utilizing automated computer systems and programs, providing customer service, locating information and assisting customers with routine inquiries at the GS-04 grade level but less than one year and less that four years above high school education as described in Education; compute the percentage of the requirements that you meet and the total should be at least 100%.  To compute the percentage, divide the total months of qualifying experience by 12; then divide your semester hours of graduate education by 18; add the two percentages.  The total percentage must equal at least 100 percent to qualify. (Note: You must attach a copy of your transcripts.)
