Library Assistant

About This Role

This role assists the Library Director in all aspects of running the library, including helping patrons, supervising volunteers, and performing technical library functions. It suits an individual comfortable with computers and providing excellent customer service in a fast-paced environment.

Responsibilities

• Provide impeccable customer service and social perceptiveness, including evaluating customer satisfaction and responsiveness and pivoting service as needed
• Greet members and guests in a courteous and professional manner
• Use proprietary software and be comfortable with computers and computerized transactions in a time-sensitive, fast-paced environment
• Instruct members in the use of computers, laptops, tablets, smartphones, eReaders, and other devices
• Manage volunteer schedules and training
• Assist in procedures for opening and closing the library
• Promote products to members, check out library materials, and check in returned materials
• Professionally and efficiently handle complaints
• Multi-task during the work shift
• Sort and re-shelve returned books, periodicals, and other library materials
• Enter new members into the library database
• Assist members in finding information and materials and answer questions they may have
• Instruct members to utilize the library software to find, reserve, and renew materials
• Answer the telephone, organize and maintain files, and perform other clerical tasks such as operating a copier and fax machine
• Attend punctually and follow time clock procedures per company policy
• Notify members of overdue materials and assess fines and fees for late, lost, or damaged materials
• Select, order, receive, process, and maintain all library materials
• Enter all library materials into the online library catalog and update records as necessary
• Repair damaged materials
• Assist with inventory of library materials, including selection, deselection, and presentation of materials
• Act as an advisor and recommend reading or viewing material to members
• Help plan and present special programs, such as Virtual Reality, author book talks, classes, story times, and outreach
• Read, write, and verbally communicate in English
• Supervise volunteers

Requirements

• Sufficient training and education to demonstrate possession of required knowledge, skills, and qualifications
• Associate's degree (A.A.) or equivalent from a two-year college or technical school; or one year of related experience and/or training in a library setting; or equivalent combination of education and experience
