- Research names, citations, medications, procedures, and terminology for accurate and complete transcripts
- Proofread and quality-check your own work before submission
- Build and maintain glossaries, and act on feedback from quality checks
- Flag poor audio and mark inaudible passages properly rather than guessing
Requirements
- Solid, demonstrable experience of legal and/or medical transcription
- Proven experience of working from audio and video files into templates with strict protocol and formatting rules
- Excellent English grammar, punctuation, and vocabulary, and confidence with legal and/or medical terminology
- Fast, accurate touch typing (around 75 wpm or better) with an excellent ear and genuine attention to detail
- Ability to research case references, names, and terminology online and get them right
- Reliability and clear communication
- Self-employed status in the UK, invoicing for work, responsible for own tax and National Insurance, and holding a UK bank account

- A stable broadband connection and good-quality headphones
- Willingness to work in line with information security procedures, including secure file handling, device encryption, and password policy
Nice to have:
- Three or more years' experience of court, tribunal, inquiry, or clinical transcription
- BIVR accreditation, or a relevant transcription or medical secretarial qualification (for example AMSPAR)
- Familiarity with digital recording platforms such as FTR, Liberty, or VIQ
- Existing DBS or SC clearance
Benefits
- Work from home
- Vetting sponsored and funded in full
Important Details
- Schedule: Typically 5 to 8 hours of audio per week, though volume fluctuates
- Turnaround times vary widely, from short-notice same-day jobs to those allowing more than ten days
- A transcription foot pedal (Infinity IN-USB 2 or 3, or equivalent) is strongly recommended
Vetting and Residency
- UK residency and UK-based working: You must be resident in the UK and hold the right to work here, and you must carry out all work while physically in the UK. Files must not be accessed or worked on from outside the UK.
- DBS and Security Check (SC): You must already hold, or be willing to undergo, a DBS check and SC clearance processed by UK Security Vetting.
- Eligibility: SC clearance normally requires a sustained recent period of UK residency (commonly five continuous years immediately before application). Vetting covers identity, criminal record, financial history, and Security Service checks, and typically takes several weeks.
- Confidentiality: All transcribers work under a non-disclosure agreement and to data handling procedures.
Application Process
- Email your CV with a short covering note telling us your legal and/or medical transcription experience, the kinds of templates and style guides you have worked to, how many hours of audio a week you could realistically take on, whether you currently hold DBS or SC clearance, and confirmation that you are UK resident and will be working in the UK
- Shortlisted applicants will be asked to complete a short test transcription against one of our templates, with proper feedback provided
