About the role

The Learning Specialist and Athletics Advisor supports the academic success of students, with a focus on those with learning disabilities and student-athletes. Key responsibilities include assessing learning needs; overseeing testing for learning services; coordinating the summer bridge program; advising student-athletes on academic and NCAA eligibility; managing tutoring programs and textbook purchases; and supervising learning specialists, tutors, and academic coaches. This role requires complex problem solving based on a variety of individual student variables and creating innovative individualized educational plans, and has latitude to determine objectives and tasks within the Frost Family Learning Center.

  • Runs the Frost Family Learning Center including hiring, training, and supervising staff and students
  • Makes complex decisions regarding learning services, and selects methods to obtain academic objectives and modifies solutions when necessary
  • Advises student athletes towards class selection, graduation and NCAA eligibility
  • Advises a small caseload of students with choosing classes that fulfill degree requirements
  • Reviews student records for NCAA compliance
  • Responsible for recruitment of students
  • Coordinates and implements the summer bridge program
  • Proctors, evaluates, and creates individualized educational plans based on the NCAA GRO survey (or similar) for all incoming student-athletes and develops a risk profile for each sport
  • Creates and implements learning plans for at-risk freshmen in the summer program which may include reading comprehension work
  • Schedules tutors
  • Maintains the Grades First program
  • Facilitates the ordering of textbooks through Barnes and Noble Campus
  • Serves as liaison to campus and department resources to promote utilization of campus resources
  • Works with the Center for Student Accessibility to partner with students who need additional campus resources for their disability

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Skill and knowledge in working with at-risk students at the secondary and or post-secondary level in areas of self-regulated learning and study strategies, critical reading skills and academic writing skills
  • Skilled in organizing and implementing a tutoring program for students
  • Ability to advise UTC student-athletes towards graduation
  • Skills and ability to work with diverse populations of students Ability to work nights and weekends

Minimum

Requires a bachelor’s degree; experience working with student-athletes at the Division I level; and four years of experience working with students with learning disabilities at the secondary or post-secondary level.

A valid driver’s license is required.

Preferred

Master’s degree in special education, sports administration or related field; and knowledge of UTC student resources, MS access databases, and NCAA rules and regulations.

Compensation and Benefits

  • UT Market Range: MR07
  • Anticipated hiring salary: $47,250 - $52,000
