Duties
Serves as a work leader of a small crew consisting of three or more employees (at least one of which is at the GS-462-5 grade level) engaged primarily in tree marking activities.
Lead responsibilities include distributing workload among employees, checking status and progress of work and making adjustments, accepting finished work and amending or rejecting work not meeting standards, instructing employees in specific task and job techniques, giving on-the-job training to new employees, checking working conditions and ensuring work is done safely, monitoring performance and disciplinary problems, resolving simple informal complaints of employees, reporting on employee performance, and making reports including work time and leave of employees.
Estimates volume, defect, and quality of timber in a given area.
Under supervision of a professional forester, and using pre-established marking rules, selects and marks trees to be harvested or left uncut. Prepares area maps and marks boundaries.
Summarizes cruising and marking data and prepares reports.
Qualifications

GS-06: (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to at least GS-05 grade level.
Specialized experience is defined as: Performing standardized timber cruising work. Using tools such as relaskop, diameter tape, compass, prism, clinometer, and power equipment; serving as a qualified timber cruiser, determining the quantity of timber in a given area by species, type, and quality; applying silvicultural prescriptions, aerial photographs, maps, environmental analysis reports, and marking guides to designate harvest timber in a variety of stand conditions.
GS-06 there is no education substitution.
