Duties
The major duties of the position include, but are not limited to the following:
- Leads three or more correctional officers in a team approach to accomplish operational tasks related to correctional/detention policy procedures.
- Provides inmate supervision, searches, transportation, classification and counts.
- Maintains the security of the facility as well as the custody and humane treatment of inmates.
- Coordinates and supervises inmate services, activities and programs.
- Supervises inmate movement, maintains discipline and prevents the introduction of contraband into the facilities.
- Receives newly committed offenders and evaluates behavioral adjustment to confinement.
Qualifications
GL-07:
One year experience providing supervision and care to criminal offenders in the operations of a correctional and/or detention facility; enforcing rules and regulations governing facility security, inmate accountability and inmate conduct; and exercising sound judgment in making instantaneous decisions affecting life, well-being, civil liberties and property. Experience may have been gained in work such as police officer, mental health counselor in a residential facility, or detention.
OR
Education: One full academic year (18 semester hours or 27 quarter hours) of graduate education with major study in criminal justice, social science, or other fields related to the position
OR; a
Combination of education and experience.
GL-08:
One year experience equivalent to the GL-07 grade level providing direct supervision and care to criminal offenders and providing guidance to lower level correctional officers in the operation of a correctional and/or detention facility; enforcing rules and regulations governing facility security, inmate accountability and inmate conduct; and exercising sound judgment in making instantaneous decision affecting life, well-being, civil liberties and property. Experience may have been gained in work such as serving as a lead police officer; mental health counselor in a residential facility; or detention officer.

Suitability, Clearance & Requirements: A background security investigation will be required for all new hires. Appointment will be subject to the applicant's successful completion of a background security investigation and favorable adjudication. Failure to successfully meet these requirements will be grounds for termination.
Driving Record Requirement: Incumbent is required to operate a government-owned or leased motor vehicle, in the performance of duties; therefore, a valid driver’s license is required. Incumbent must have a safe driving record within the three-year period immediately preceding submittal of GSA Form 3607 and be able to meet the safe driving requirements of the Bureau of Indian Affairs.
Maximum Entry Age Limit: This position is a primary law enforcement position and covered under special retirement provisions for law enforcement officer subject to maximum entry age and mandatory retirement. Applicants appointed to a Lead Correctional Officer position must be at least 21 years of age. Also, applicants appointed to a Lead Correctional Officer position in the Federal service must not have reached their 37th birthday upon appointment to the position unless they previously served in a Federal civilian law enforcement position covered by special civil service retirement provisions, including early or mandatory retirement. This requirement may be waived only for preference eligible veterans.
Drug Testing: This is a testing designated position (TDP) under the Department of the Interior Drug-Free Workplace Program. Selectee is subject to pre-employment testing and random post-appointment testing thereafter.
Medical Requirements: The duties of this position require moderate to arduous physical exertion involving walking and standing, use of firearms, and exposure to inclement weather. All applicants will be subject to pre-employment medical exam.
