About the role

Duties

Individually, as a field crew leader and as a team member, conducts studies of wildlife, mainly concerning forest carnivores and raptors, including potential prey species. Assists in all aspects of research including field support, logistic planning, project coordination, data collection, wildlife surveys, and animal trapping and handling.   In addition, assists with spatial/GIS analyses, data organization, statistical analyses, and publication support consistent with a graduate-level analytical proficiency. Collects data following protocols prescribed by the project supervisor. Identifies woody plant species common to the area. Drives on public and private road systems without direct supervision. Locates off-road study sites and sample points using compass, topographic maps and/or GPS unit. Records field data in a legible manner. Enters field data into a computer database. Maintains field equipment in good working condition. Ensures that field work is conducted following established safety protocols and reporting.

Leads a team of employees performing work up to the GS-06 level. Articulates and communicates to the team the assignment, project, or problem to be solved. Coaches the team in the selection and application of appropriate problem solving methods and techniques, distributes and balances workload and tasks, and makes adjustments to accomplish the assignments in a timely manner. Serves as a facilitator and/or negotiator in coordinating team initiatives and in consensus building. Represents the team in dealings with the supervisor or manager in securing needed information on major work problems and issues that arise. Leads the team in assessing its strengths and weaknesses and provides leadership to the team in exploring alternative and determining what improvement can be made. Approves emergency leave for up to three days, eight hours or less for medical appointments, and/or other types of leave as delegated by management. Resolves simple, informal complaints of employees and refers others such as formal grievances and appeals to the supervisor or appropriate management official.

Qualifications

You must possess the Basic Requirements identified below to be considered eligible for this position. Transcripts must be provided for qualifications based on education. Your application or resume must clearly show that you possess the appropriate experience requirements.

GS-07; (1) One year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-06 grade level

Specialized experience is defined as: Research activity or control program work. Nursery work that required the growing and maintenance of plants in a controlled environment. Work comparable to that with a large dairy farm where production records, animal environment, and sanitary conditions were kept in accordance with modern dairy practice.

Successful completion of one full year of graduate education in a field directly related to the work of the position. One year of full-time graduate education is considered to be the number of credit hours that the school attended has determined to represent 1 year of full-time study. If that information cannot be obtained from the school, 18 semester hours should be considered as satisfying the 1 year of full-time study requirement. Part-time graduate education is creditable in accordance with its relationship to a year of full-time study at the school attended.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
