About the role
The Latin American Youth Center (LAYC) AmeriCorps program in Riverdale, MD engages dedicated part-time members in meaningful service supporting the academic success, personal development, and well-being of middle and high school youth in Prince George’s County. Members serve at High Point High School, Buck Lodge Middle School, and William Wirt Middle School, providing academic tutoring, mentoring, homework assistance, and enrichment activities that build students’ confidence, leadership, and life skills.Through direct service and community engagement, members help address barriers to education by fostering supportive relationships, promoting student attendance and engagement, and encouraging positive youth development. Members facilitate small-group activities, support literacy and academic programs, organize service-learning projects, and connect students and families with community organizations and resources. As part-time AmeriCorps Members, participants also receive professional development, leadership training, and career-readiness opportunities while engaging in community events and service activities. Through their service, members strengthen their leadership skills, expand their professional networks, develop a deeper understanding of community needs, and build a lasting commitment to civic engagement and public service.

Member Duties : Part-time AmeriCorps Members will serve youth at Buck Lodge Middle School and William Wirt Middle School by providing academic support, tutoring, homework assistance, mentoring, and enrichment activities. Members will facilitate small-group sessions focused on literacy, social-emotional learning, leadership, and life skills; support after-school programs and clubs; and assist with service-learning and community engagement projects. Members will build positive relationships with students, encourage attendance and engagement, and connect youth and families with community organizations and resources. Members will also participate in professional development, leadership training, and community events to strengthen career readiness, civic engagement, and leadership skills while contributing to positive outcomes for Prince George’s County youth.
