Law Enforcement Ranger

Duties

Develops and implements a law enforcement program involving investigations, apprehending violators, interagency coordination, education, and other law enforcement-related activities. Ensures program activities are consistent with national and state policies and procedures for carrying out law enforcement activities.

Investigates areas where acts of criminal activity or offenses of the criminal laws and regulations of the United States that relate to the public lands and resources have occurred. Conducts and prepares investigation reports by documenting findings and facts.

May be assigned to multi-agency task forces to perform special law enforcement activities, e.g. eradication of marijuana gardens, crowd control, and archeological/cultural, vegetation/timber, arson, drug, and wild horse and burro investigations. Participates in ground and air surveillance to identify suspects and in raids to apprehend suspects and evidence. Serves search warrants and searches for, collects, photographs, and catalogs evidence. May be assigned to provide law enforcement and security services on interagency operations such as wild land fires or homeland security incidents.

BLM Criminal Investigators (Special Agents) have interstate responsibility to investigate violations of Federal laws and regulations relating to the management, use and development of the public lands and their resources. These include those investigations related to hazardous materials violations, Federally-owned minerals (fraud/theft); controlled substance violations; theft, sale, and destruction of archaeological and paleontological resources; assault, threat, or intimidation of Bureau employees, theft of timber and other natural resources; and wildfire arson; trespass; wild horse & burro adoption violations; violations of closures to protect public lands; and damage, theft, or vandalism of Government property.

Qualifications

In order to be rated as qualified for this position, we must be able to determine that you meet the specialized experience requirement - please be sure to include this information in your resume. To be creditable, this experience must have been equivalent in difficulty and complexity to the next lower grade of the position to be filled.

For GS-11 : One (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade level (GS-9) in the federal service. Specialized experience is experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled. Examples of specialized experience are those which demonstrated knowledge of law enforcement activities, including experience in using criminal investigative techniques and applying laws of evidence; testifying in a court of law; documentation of a criminal investigation in investigative reports; a knowledge of Federal and state laws; knowledge of administrative, civil and criminal proceedings; and and experience coordinating criminal investigations. Or Education: Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree or 3 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree or LL.M., if related OR Combination of Education and Experience: Total qualifying education as described above and experience as listed above are combined together and when combined must total to equal at least 100 percent to qualify. Only graduate level education may be combined with experience.
