Law Clerk

About This Role

This law clerk position involves conducting legal research, preparing briefs, and assisting a Commissioner with legal recommendations and courtroom hearings. The role suits a law student or recent graduate with strong research and communication skills.

Responsibilities

• Conduct legal research and prepare briefs for individual cases
• Consult with a Commissioner, offering legal recommendations on cases
• Draft, review, and edit the Commissioners’ order instructions and orders for clarity and accuracy
• Assist in the courtroom with hearings
• Review and summarize written evidence and exhibits, including medical records

Requirements

• Must be enrolled in or recently graduated from an ABA-accredited law school
• Excellent research skills
• Written and verbal communication
• Ability to maintain confidentiality at all times
• Good interpersonal skills
• Ability to prepare memos and decisions
• Strong attention to detail
• Critical thinking skills with the ability to learn and apply SC Workers’ Compensation laws and regulations
• Strong computer skills with the ability to learn the Workers’ Compensation technology system
• Ability to communicate effectively
• Ability to plan and organize work activities and prioritize task completion

Nice to have:

• Knowledge of relevant laws, regulations, policies, and procedures and organizational functions
• Knowledge of applicable terminology and research practices
• Taken a class on workers’ compensation or SC Administrative Law
• Taken an advanced legal writing course

Important Details

• Schedule: 20-25 hours per week
• Contract: time-limited position
