Duties
MAJOR DUTIES: The position is located at Guadalupe Mountains National Park in the Division of Maintenance. Incumbent is Responsible for performing laborer duties pertaining to trail work. Builds rock and log drainage structures, retainer bars/steps, rock walls, and trail head riprap. Repairs and places trail signs and benches. Also assists in paved surface repair and mixing and placing concrete and similar materials used for hard surface trails. Uses pick and shovel Pulaski's, rock bars, sledgehammers and other trade tools in laborer-type work. Loads and unloads materials and other cargo from trucks, trailers, etc. Incumbent May also assist with other park projects on a regular basis.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Heavy physical exertion is frequently required in bending, lifting, and using hand and power tools in trail work. Examples of typical strenuous activity, include frequently lifting and carrying objects weighing up to 100 pounds., carrying and rolling rocks and logs, moving rocks of several tons with rock bars, using hammers to crush or shape rock, and using shovels extensively; frequently walks up to 20 miles daily; and must not have potential emergency medical problems that could complicate work in remote areas for extended periods of time.
WORK ENVIRONMENT: Works under extreme weather conditions at times with temperatures of 100 degrees and occasionally in the lower teens with extremely high winds. Work is performed in elevations ranging from 5000 to 8500 feet above sea level.
AREA INFORMATION/HOUSEING INFORMATION: Guadalupe Mountains NationalPark is located in western Texas, 55 miles from Carlsbad, NM and 110 miles from El Paso, Texas. This is a remote park with the nearest community of Dell City (pop. 500), which has bus service for school grades K-12. The area has a semi-arid climate with warm summers, mild winters, abundant sunshine, low relative humidity and approximately 21 inches of rainfall per year. Grocery and department stores, hospitals, doctors, churches of most denominations, banks, motels, restaurants, and recreational facilities are found in Carlsbad, NM and in EI Paso, TX. Government housing is not available. Daily government van pools are available from Carlsbad, NM and Dell City,TX to and from Park facilities for duty reporting.
Qualifications
All qualifications must be met by the closing date of this announcement, Friday, June 30, 2017**. Qualifying experience may be obtained in the private or public sectors.**
QUALIFICATIONS: WG: Applicants must be physically fit and must possess the knowledge, skills, and abilities of the elements listed in Section 25 of the Online Occupational Questionnaire to perform the duties of the position at the level for which they are applying. A specific length of time and experience is not required; however you must be able to demonstrate the rough experience shown in your written application, that you possess sufficient knowledge, skill and ability to perform the duties of the position without more than normal supervision. Examples of experience for this position include: janitorial, light maintenance and laboring duties. All qualification requirements must be met by the closing date of this announcement. You must meet level 2 on the screen out factor/element and an average of level 2 on all factors/elements in the occupational assessment questionnaire.
