Laboratory Assistant

About This Role

Working under the general supervision of the Laboratory Phlebotomy Management, the Laboratory Assistant performs laboratory procedures in a timely and accurate manner according to established hospital policies and departmental procedures. This position involves clerical duties, clinical specimen accessioning, sample sorting, and data entry in a fast-paced, high-throughput environment. The role requires good communication skills, a caring attitude towards patients and visitors, and the ability to work both individually and as part of a team.

Responsibilities

• Perform laboratory procedures in a timely and accurate manner according to established hospital policies and departmental procedures
• Perform clerical duties, including faxing and answering phones
• Run the pneumatic tube system
• Register and order reference labs from other healthcare facilities using the computer system
• Perform clinical specimen accessioning, sample sorting, and data entry according to established standard operating procedures
• Enter patient information accurately and in a timely manner
• Keep hospital and patient information confidential at all times
• Undertake any other duties assigned by the Phlebotomy Manager, Lab Manager, and Lab Director

Requirements

• High School Diploma (diploma or transcripts are required upon hire)
• Strong computer skills
• Manual dexterity and good eye/hand coordination
• Ability to distinguish sound in low to high range to assure proper operation of clinical equipment
• Ability to communicate with other healthcare providers by telephone to obtain or give information critical to patient care
• Visual acuity, basic mathematical skills, and color discrimination ability
• Ability to obtain and interpret pertinent information in terms of the patient’s needs that are age appropriate

Nice to have:

• 1-year hospital experience
• Prior customer service experience
