Laboratory Assistant

About This Role

The Laboratory Assistant plays a crucial role in supporting the laboratory team by performing various non-technical functions under supervision. This position is ideal for individuals who are detail-oriented and enjoy working in a clinical environment, contributing to patient care through specimen collection and processing.

Responsibilities

• Collect specimens and process them according to established procedures
• Submit and monitor specimens sent to referral laboratories
• Educate patients and/or families regarding specimen collection procedures
• Perform venipunctures and finger sticks on patients of all ages
• Maintain accurate documentation of specimen collection
• Utilize computer information systems for job functions
• Handle clerical duties such as faxing and managing reports
• Review and address issues related to outstanding specimens
• Prepare specimens for courier pick-up and ensure proper labeling
• Conduct periodic preventive maintenance and quality assurance procedures
• Communicate effectively with team members and troubleshoot specimen-related issues

Requirements

• Vocational/Technical Degree preferred
• 1-3 years of experience in a clinical laboratory setting preferred
• Certification in Phlebotomy, Medical Assistant, Paramedic, or EMT preferred
• Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment
• Excellent customer service skills and effective communication abilities
• Knowledge of safety policies and procedures
