About the role

Duties

  • Oversees implementation of new system hardware and software and develops operating procedures. Monitors the ongoing operation of a complex network environment with a large number of users in an installation or command and ensures corrective action to restore operational service is accomplished.

  • Receives network, communications, and related operating systems from various sources such as design centers and commercial vendors and ensures that an inventory of all network hardware and software is maintained. Oversees configuration and installation of network equipment and changing the components of existing equipment for efficient operation.

  • Performs in-depth analysis of automated and manual systems related to networks and/or telecommunications to accomplish design assignment. Determines whether or not existing systems can be used or changed. Designs the physical structure of required databases considering factors such as access methods, frequency of access, storage media, data volatility, search strategies to be employed.

  • Analyzes equipment and software reliability and utilization reports for large, complex equipment and software systems to identify and correct problem areas and to establish computer and telecommunications performance levels. Surveys and evaluates network usage, user complaints, traffic interruptions or other communications issues, hardware and software capabilities, and other relevant factors.

  • Reviews proposals for change, which consist of objectives, scope, and users' expectations. Using customer input, gathers facts about the nature of the work involved in the user's application area, the workflow, the processing actions, and the work product(s).

Experience required: To qualify based on your work experience, your resume must describe at least one year of experience which prepared you to do the work in this job. Specialized experience is defined as: experience identifying potential network system modifications; utilizing work processes, data models, work rules, file/database designs, and operating procedures applicable to network operation; experience advising on alternative approaches in application system development related to networks and/or telecommunications; experience reviewing hardware and software systems network operations functions; and experience analyzing customer problems and providing assistance. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-11).

Time in Grade Requirement: Applicants who have held a General Schedule (GS) position within the last 52 weeks must have 52 weeks of Federal service at the next lower grade (or equivalent).
