Duties
- Installs hardware and software, maintains network operations, and ensures that inquiries and problems concerning networks, computers, peripherals, and services are expeditiously resolved.
- Installs network software and equipment and changes the components within existing equipment. Maintains procedures for networks, systems operations, database management, and product assembly and installation.
- Monitors operation of the network and ensures that hardware and software are functioning properly and that operation standards are met. Studies and analyzes assigned installation equipment and software reliability and utilization reports to identify and correct problem areas.
- Provides connectivity to, and availability of, server based services. Provides configuration management specifications, addressing schemes, naming conventions, and standards necessary to sustain operations and maintain the integrity, identity, and security of the data and digital network, attached systems, or subsystems.
Qualifications

Experience required:
Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
To qualify based on your experience, your resume must describe at least one year of experience which prepared you to do the work in this job.
Specialized IT experience is defined as: experience applying IT concepts, principles, methods, and practices; working with network operations, configurations and protocols; and experience troubleshooting system software and hardware. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-07).
Individuals must also have IT-related experience demonstrating each of the four competencies listed below.
Required Competencies:

Customer Service - Works with clients and customers (that is, any individuals who use or receive the services or products that your work unit produces, including the general public, individuals who work in the agency, other agencies, or organizations outside the Government) to assess their needs, provide information or assistance, resolve their problems, or satisfy their expectations; knows about available products and services; is committed to providing quality products and services.
3. Oral Communication - Expresses information (for example, ideas or facts) to individuals or groups effectively, taking into account the audience and nature of the information (for example, technical, sensitive, controversial); makes clear and convincing oral presentations; listens to others, attends to nonverbal cues, and responds appropriately.
4. Problem Solving - Identifies problems; determines accuracy and relevance of information; uses sound judgment to generate and evaluate alternatives, and to make recommendation.
Time in Grade Requirement: Applicants who have held a General Schedule (GS) position within the last 52 weeks must have 52 weeks of Federal service at the second lower grade (or equivalent).
Education
Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify. For this job, you may qualify if your education meets the definitions below:
Successful completion of a Master's degree or equivalent graduate degree or 2 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a master's degree or equivalent graduate degree in computer science, engineering, information science, information systems management, mathematics, operations research, statistics, or technology management or degree that provided a minimum of 24 semester hours in one or more of the fields identified above and required the development or adaptation of applications, systems or networks.
OR
A combination of the experience as described in the "Experience Required" section above and the undergraduate education described above which, when combined, is equivalent to 100% of the qualification requirement. (To compute the percentage, divide your total months of qualifying experience by 12. Then divide your semester hours of undergraduate education by 18. Add the two percentages. The total percentage must equal at least 100% to qualify).
