Ironworker

About This Role

This physically demanding position involves erecting, positioning, aligning, and securing structural steel components on construction projects. It suits a hard worker who enjoys being outdoors, thrives in a team atmosphere, and is willing to travel.

Responsibilities

• Erect, position, align, and secure structural steel components, including beams, columns, joists, decking, and other metal materials
• Install miscellaneous metals such as stairs, handrails, guardrails, ladders, and other fabricated steel components
• Read and interpret construction drawings, blueprints, specifications, and installation details
• Perform welding, cutting, grinding, bolting, and fastening of structural steel and metal components
• Assist with rigging, signaling, and directing crane operations for the safe lifting and placement of materials
• Use hand tools, power tools, welding equipment, and other construction-related equipment safely and efficiently
• Verify proper alignment, elevation, and placement of steel components according to project specifications
• Install and secure metal decking and other related building components as required
• Work from aerial lifts, ladders, scaffolding, and elevated work platforms while following fall protection requirements
• Coordinate with superintendents, foremen, and other trades to maintain project schedules and productivity
• Inspect tools, equipment, rigging, and materials to ensure safe operating conditions
• Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work environment
• Follow company safety policies, OSHA regulations, and jobsite-specific safety procedures
• Assist with material handling, unloading, staging, and general construction activities as needed
• Perform additional duties as assigned by field supervision
• Set up hoisting equipment for raising and placing structural steel members
• Install rigging from the steel members to the hook of the hoist, sling chain, cable or rope by becoming a certified Rigger
• Signal worker operating hoisting equipment to lift and place steel member by becoming a certified signal person
• Guide member using tag line (rope) or by hands from a ladder, scaffold or a mechanical lift in order to guide it into position
• Pull, push, or pry steel members into approximate position while member is supported by hoisting device
• Force members into final position, using spud wrenches, bull pins, drift pins and other hand tools
• Align bolt holes in member with corresponding holes in previously member by driving drift pins or handle of a spud wrench through holes
• Verify vertical and horizontal alignment of members, using plumb bob, hand level, laser plumb level or a surveying transit
• Bolt aligned members to keep them in position until they can be permanently bolted or welded in place
• Cut and weld steel members to make alterations, using the proper AISC welding equipment
• Specialize in erecting or repairing specific types of structures

Requirements

• Willingness to travel
• Drug screen, physical, and criminal background check
• Ability to lift up to 70 pounds occasionally; 40-50 pounds frequently
• Frequent climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching and handling
• Occasional fingering and feeling
• Ability to work comfortably at heights above 15 feet
• Ability to work outdoors
