Duties
- Provides support for data and voice networks.
- Maintains network by troubleshooting and repairing outages.
- Secures network by developing network access, monitoring, repairing, control, and evaluation; maintaining documentation.
- Installs, removes, maintains, modifies, troubleshoots, and repairs voice and/or non-voice communications systems.
Qualifications

Experience required: Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
To qualify based on your experience, your resume must describe at least one year of experience which prepared you to do the work in this job. Specialized experience is defined as: Experience with evaluating the overall performance of data and voice systems and resolution of system problems (stand-alone or in a network). Experience with all aspects of computer and end user voice switching hardware and software in a network. Experience with troubleshooting/diagnosing data, voice and networking problems. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the GS-07 level in the federal service. And have IT-related experience demonstrating each of the four competencies listed below:
- Attention to Detail – Work is considered technical, Works with work orders, trouble tickets and project installation information.
- Customer Service - Works with clients and customers (installation computer specialists, network terminal users, systems developers, contractors, vendors representatives, equipment technical support personnel, sales representatives, and regional/data communications center specialists throughout the east coast and involving all services) to assess their needs, provide information or assistance, resolve their problems, or satisfy their expectations; knows about available products and services; is committed to providing quality products and services.
- Oral Communication - The employee resolves problems, coordinates work with other specialists and user personnel as necessary. Interprets policy, and makes some technical decisions regarding network/data/voice communications and equipment performance; makes clear and convincing oral presentations; listens to others, attends to nonverbal cues, and responds appropriately.
- Problem Solving - Using various diagnostic tools and test equipment the incumbent must be prepared to discover equipment malfunctions and operational difficulties.
You will be evaluated on the basis of your level of competency (knowledge, skills, abilities) in the following areas:
- Knowledge of network hardware/software automation.
- Skill in troubleshooting network hardware/software equipment.
- Knowledge in current network/telecommunications services and requirements.
- Knowledge of voice or non-voice communication systems.

For the GS -09 (or equivalent) Master's degree or equivalent graduate degree or 2 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a master's degree or equivalent graduate degree in computer science, engineering, information science, information systems management, mathematics, operations research, statistics, or technology management or degree that provided a minimum of 24 semester hours in one or more of the fields identified above and required the development or adaptation of applications, systems or networks. (Note you must attach a copy of your transcript for verification).
