INDUSTRIAL HYGIENIST

Duties

The duties described are for the full-performance level. At developmental grade levels, assignments will be of more limited scope, performed with less independence, and limited complexity.

As a INDUSTRIAL HYGIENIST, you will:

• Conceive, formulate, establish, and coordinate basic requirements to be implemented throughout USCIS that consists of a wide range of activities related to environmental health and safety surveys, abatement/maintenance/remediation programs, technical IH equipment operation/maintenance, in-door air quality testing, ergonomics, pandemic health and hazard communication.
• Apply expertise to environmental laws, policies, methodologies, regulations/standards, operational directives, objectives sufficient to plan, and administer a USCIS-wide Industrial Hygiene program.
• Initiate procedures for implementing technical Industrial Hygiene safety standards, codes and requirements for a wide variety of operations to meet federal compliance standards, control/eliminate unsafe conditions, or provide resolution to indicated complaints.
• Plan, organize, research and evaluate the effectiveness of established Industrial Hygiene processes and procedures within USCIS.
• Consult and coordinate with a wide variety of individuals/experts involving complex Industrial Hygiene conditions/issues in the resolution of hazards/complaints and the development of guidance and procedures.

Qualifications

BASIC EDUCATION REQUIREMENT: A Degree in Industrial hygiene; or a branch of engineering, physical science, or life science that included 12 semester hours in chemistry, including organic chemistry, and 18 additional semester hours of courses in any combination of chemistry, physics, engineering, health physics, environmental health, biostatistics, biology, physiology, toxicology, epidemiology, or industrial hygiene. Courses in the history or teaching of chemistry are not acceptable.
OR
Combination of education and experience -- at least 12 semester hours of course work in chemistry, including organic chemistry, and 18 additional semester hours as specified in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.

GS-12: You qualify at the GS-12 level you must possess one (1) year of specialized experience, which is equivalent to the GS-11 level in the federal government, that equipped you with the skills needed to successfully perform the duties of the position. You must have experience performing the following duties:

• Evaluating occupational safety and health and industrial hygiene program plans, policies, and procedures;
• Conducting scheduled or as needed occupational health and safety workplace testing, inspections, to include onsite industrial hygiene testing;
• Implementing Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) laws, policies, methodologies, regulations/standards to administer a comprehensive Occupational safety and Health, Industrial and Environmental Hygiene program;
• Advising management on recommended resolution or abatement to health deficiencies/issues.

GS-13: In Addition to the requirements at the lower grade level(s), to qualify at the GS-13 level you must possess one (1) year of specialized experience, which is equivalent to the GS-12 level in the federal government, that equipped you with the skills needed to successfully perform the duties of the position. You must have experience performing the following duties:

• Conducting and oversite of scheduled or as needed occupational health and safety workplace testing, inspections and/or investigations, to include onsite industrial hygiene testing;
• Educating and Advising on Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) laws, policies, methodologies, regulations/standards to administer a comprehensive Occupational safety and Health, Industrial and Environmental Hygiene program;
• Advising in collaboration with senior management on recommended resolution or abatement to health deficiencies/issues;
• Interpreting environmental and occupational health assessment data and developing corresponding risk assessment;
• Developing and advising senior management on recommended resolution or abatement to health deficiencies/issues
