Pay Range: $18.87 - $29.73 per hour

Summary Performs a variety of technical duties requiring extensive external customer interaction and computer skills as well as knowledge of Federal, State, and Accrediting Agency regulations. Demonstrates courtesy, attention to legal and ethical issues, and accuracy. Performs duties with limited supervision. Principally responsible for the completeness of the record and release of information in accordance with hospital, department, and regulatory agency guidelines. Maintains a demeanor and appearance appropriate for representation of RUMC. Exemplifies the Rush mission, vision, and values and acts in accordance with Rush policies and procedures.

Other Information Required Job Qualifications:

  • High school graduate.
  • Solid understanding of medical terminology and MS Office/Windows applications.
  • Familiar with the equipment used by HIM Scanners.
  • Possesses general computer and software applications
  • Interacts well with others.
  • Able to direct the work of others.
  • Demonstrates attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Transports charts, paper documents and records, and other items, mindful of patient privacy and security.
  • Capable of concentrating on current tasks within an open, often distracting environment.

Preferred Job Qualifications

  • College-level coursework in health information or accounting.
  • Experience in health information management experience.

Physical Demands

  • Able to move about the medical center throughout shift.
  • Able to lift at least 50 lbs.

Responsibilities Job Responsibilities:

  • Represents Health Information Management and RUMC through interviews, follow-up letters, telephone calls, faxing, and/or on-line communication with customers both internal and external to the medical center.
  • Adheres to all federal, state and local guidelines for the processing of RUMC patient health information.
  • Update the Master Patient Index, correction work
  • Queues perform merges, contact moves in accordance to department guidelines.
  • Responsible for responding to pages (via internal communications system) from patient care areas for copying and copy pertinent information to facilitate patient transfer to another healthcare provider.
  • Interviews patients, patient families, and/or others to obtain information needed to complete state mandated documents including, but not limited to birth and death certificates.
  • Trains HIM Scanners, as needed.
  • Scans medical records and performs quality review of images.
  • Maintains scanning equipment.
  • Utilizes several software applications to locate and reproduce electronic, paper, film or scanned medical records. Activate MyChart account requests.
  • Issues medical record numbers according to RUMC guidelines.
  • Receives requests for release of information and follows up on charts, which are difficult to locate.
  • Assists with any function in the department as requested including copying, courier, filing, mail backs and other tasks· Responsible for the efficient and effective use of equipment and supplies; reports problems related to equipment or shortages of supplies immediately per department protocol.
  • Accountable for following the chart retrieval process from the off-site storage facility.
  • Works closely with RUMC legal counsel to ensure designated records are monitored.
  • May represent department at depositions and court proceedings.
  • Locates and abstracts information into various systems; generates reports (storage paper chart) according to established department guidelines.

Quality Management Responsibilities

  • 98% prepping and scanning accuracy achieved within 3 months.
  • 100% if paper documentation scanned within 24 hours of receipt.
  • 5 day turn-around for release of information.
