About the role:
We are building the next generation of solid‑state, grid‑interactive power blocks that enable high‑density, flexible power delivery for datacenters, renewable energy systems, and advanced microgrids
The HIL Simulation Engineer is responsible for developing and executing real‑time Hardware‑in‑the‑Loop (HIL) simulations for Solid‑State Transformer (SST) and microgrid systems . This role focuses on building and maintaining RTDS‑based EMT models , performing fault and protection studies , and supporting control design and validation across grid‑connected and microgrid operating modes.
The engineer serves as a key technical contributor bridging offline simulation, control development, and laboratory validation , enabling early risk reduction and robust system behavior prior to hardware deployment. The role works closely with controls, offline simulation, protection, application, and hardware teams .
Key responsibilities :
RTDS Model Development & Real‑Time Simulation
- Develop, configure, and maintain RTDS (RSCAD) models for SST‑based power conversion and microgrid systems.
- Build detailed EMT‑level real‑time models representing:
- SST power stages and interfaces
- Utility grid equivalents and network conditions
- Microgrid configurations and operating modes
- Ensure real‑time performance, numerical stability, and model fidelity through appropriate time‑step selection and model partitioning.
Control Design & Validation Support
- Support control algorithm development and validation using RTDS‑based HIL simulation.
- Integrate controller hardware and firmware with RTDS through analog, digital, and communication interfaces.
- Execute closed‑loop HIL testing to evaluate:
- Voltage, current, and power control behavior
- Grid synchronization and islanding transitions
- Dynamic response under varying grid conditions
- Collaborate with controls engineers to debug and tune control performance based on HIL results.
Fault & Protection Studies
- Implement and execute fault scenarios in RTDS, including:
- AC grid faults (single‑line‑to‑ground, line‑to‑line, three‑phase)
- Abnormal voltage and frequency conditions
- System disturbance and recovery scenarios
- Study inverter‑based fault behavior, including current‑limited responses and protection triggering.
- Support validation of:
- Protection logic and settings
- Fault detection thresholds and timing
- Coordination between SSTs, grid interfaces, and microgrid controls
- Correlate HIL fault results with offline simulations and laboratory testing outcomes.
Model Integration & Workflow Alignment
- Translate offline MATLAB/Simulink or EMT models into RTDS‑compatible real‑time implementations.
- Maintain alignment between offline simulation assumptions and real‑time HIL models.
- Support Model‑in‑the‑Loop (MIL) and system‑level validation workflows.
Test Execution, Documentation & Collaboration
- Work with validation engineer to develop and execute structured HIL test plans and procedures.
- Collaborate cross‑functionally with:
- Offline simulation engineers
- Controls and firmware teams
- Protection and systems engineers
- Hardware and lab validation teams
- Support regression testing and repeatable HIL test execution.
Minimum Qualifications :
Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Power Systems, Power Electronics, or related field.
3+ years of experience in real‑time simulation or HIL testing for power or energy systems.
Hands‑on experience with RTDS systems, including:
- RSCAD modeling environment
- EMT‑based real‑time simulation concepts
- Hardware I/O integration
Strong understanding of:
- Power electronics and inverter‑based systems
- Grid‑connected and islanded system behavior
- Control and protection fundamentals
Ability to troubleshoot issues across models, controls, and hardware interfaces.
Preferred Qualifications :
Master’s degree or PhD in Electrical Engineering or related discipline.
Experience with:
- SSTs, medium‑voltage converters, or advanced power conversion systems
- Microgrids or distribution‑level power systems
Familiarity with:
- MATLAB/Simulink for control or plant modeling
